It shocks me that this is both of their acting debuts. They are so much better than so many already. Micro-expressions, body language, they way they each struggle and work through what they are feeling. Ollie's smirks, teasing, flirting, and stress as he battles his coming to terms with his feelings. Shu Yuan's subtle expressions when Zhang Zhun is secretly pleased with Zhen Xin's desire. He had to be so strong to film the scenes with Wu Rong.
We should acknowledge how brave these and other Chinese BL actors are to choose roles like this, and give their all to what the role rightfully deserves. They will be excluded from mainland China productions due to censorship, and have to face the ugly part of society that can't seem to get it through their thick skulls that love is love. This show exceeded my expectations by miles. Kudos to our director Wen Dao for getting the right visuals and leading these two actors through beautiful and very difficult scenes alike.
I think people that are angry about the cheating trope should also consider what anyone that is newly struggling with their sexuality goes through. I don't excuse the cheating. Understanding that it's a messy situation and they have to ebb and flow between denial and acceptance of their sexuality. It takes time to work through out before they finally come to terms with it and decide that they need to end their current relationships.
