I think that was the whole point. He recognised the smell of the brand in the bar and thought of Akira.
Also, Akira's wife hated the smell and it reminded him of how Yuki didn't mind it.

I would have liked it better without those extra 3 years to find Yuki. It was a bit much after how much they'd already suffered, and the reunion, though beautiful, wasn't very realistic.
