I think the writer is showing us the ills in our society and how children from a poor background can eventually lose everything if they are not careful. Just like Dr. Wu warned him not to be an opportunist but to focus on his education. His mentor told him he had also been in his (ZLQ's) shoes but he was more focused on his future. But, LQ is not like that. He wants things to happen more quickly instead. I'm very very disappointed in him. I understand why XX rejected him. She's more matured than he is and she's more progressive in her thinking. She wants a better future for her self and her future family. However, LQ's family situation would never allow them to live the life she wants. XX choose common sense over love. I'd have done the same if I was in her situation.

He's obsessed with RTZ and STT, how they were better off than him and how Dr. Wu helped TT to be the successor and not him. Dr. Wu told him to return the card back to his boss, but what did he do?

STT had it worse than him and never complained about her background or anything. He might have been born into a poor family but grew up with his parents and brother's love and support. STT didn't have that. So, what's its problem? Being born poor was not an excuse to be an opportunist or envious of others. Fingers are not equal. His mentor taught him right and advised him on the path not to follow. But what did he do at the end of the day? I'm not so surprised at his behavior; I didn't expect anything less from him. Unfortunately, he hurt the person trying to help him.
