In the original novel Wu Bi's dad was much colder, harder and cruel, especially when he knew they were lovers he made every effort to separate them. Su Yu then in agreement with Wu Bi's dad 'disappeared' out of Wu Bi's life and for 7 years Su Yu never contacted him, whereas Wu Bi was looking and searching for him everywhere but to no avail. The second part of the novel IMO is too unbelievable. The cousin, a businessman, having the power to order the Major (or higher up) to shoot down Su Yu's plane. A lot of BS. But happy days they boys do end up together and 'marry' in their own way ie not a real wedding but a ceremonial one.
