Her last three main roles have all been different and she pulled each one off incredibly. She also can be effective in both dramatic and comedic roles. All in all, a great actress, and I am glad her role in IOTNBO has propelled her to greater and much deserved fame.

Does it get any better towards the end? Just struggling to get through, at episode 10 currently and it's a bit…
Honestly, if you find the first 10 episodes boring, nothing in the last 6 change that. This is not a plot-driven show.

Very much this - in the end, the mother's most important actions were 20 years in the past. She is now barely an antagonist, and in the end, not important to the protagonists anymore.

Hopefully the boost from her latest drama will give her access to better and more exciting projects in the future.

It is immensely pretentious of you to claim knowledge about story telling when you are just so wrong about this story. The person who wrote this story (whom you criticize) clearly has a far better grasp on the craft than you.

There was no "main antagonist" because that wasn't the point of the show. The point of the show is these characters seeking their happiness. This is what makes this show far more meaningful for our actual lives. We don't live with "antagonists" - almost no one spends our time in some battle with some Bad Guy. We all have to deal with our emotions, our mental health, and whether we take care of ourselves and those around us. This isn't a story about fantastical aliens, this is a story about the real travails of human beings.

Amazing characters, terrible plot twist... is disappointing that the villain was pretty generic given the uniqueness…
The mom has been a villain in the looses sense. Her character has hardly driven the momentum of the story, which has centered around our trio. She is important to the overall tale, but her main actions happened 20 years before, and they are very much done with. While it might have been better then to leave all that in the past, I feel like then people would complain about a more general lack of a "classic" plot, so the show added the barest bits of one.

As an inaugural comment - while I still want the mother's miraculous survival to be explained, this show has always been about the characters dealing with the emotional and mental issues they have, not about some specific mystery or anything like that. People have fallen in love with the characters, not the story, and this episode continued to do right by those characters.
