I think the screenwriters want to make NL and TGN more layered and 3D than JY original writing to suit modern times thinking. For me I think NL is too weak and pathetic, and TGN facial expression is someone hiding something sinister all the time, or it might be Peter Ho's face LOL. If you are watching the drama I think NL will regret her decision soon, if they do this it will still be in line with the novel although some characterization changed.

I'm done with 5 eps and will continue later. So far I dislike the arrogant and woody ZCS, but I like the child version of ZWJ, YX and XF.

Come to think of it I managed to reach 5 episode of the new HSDS, the modification for the YX and XF story is pretty good in this version, and XF actress is on point, she looks so dignified and strong and clean! I can totally see her as a future Emei leader. But actually quite whitewashing YX haha, and it's a bit funny because YX is quite talkative but MRF is taciturn 😂
