EP5 If I was in the John place I would had "coronged" so hard forever. Listening to the commentaries of the channel "The Shogunate", I think I understand a change they made here. John had went to Anjiro with a demand/threat, he had to learn the language in six months or else all the villagers would be put to death. They cut this but made he feel responsible for Uejiro's death by not understanding the language and culture, by being dismissive. No matter how wrong he thinks it is, he is in their land, in their society, no matter what he thinks and does things will work their way. I just felt strange that Mariko's presence as his translator meant nothing. Shouldn't she translate more and explain better to prevent things like this from happening? No one explain anything to John, anything, he had no idea he was doing something "wrong" and harmful.
I think is because James and Mariko interactions are "forced", more than James and Fuji relationship. Yes, Fuji was forced to "marry" James, but they are not obliged to interact more than the strictly necessary and talk at all. Mariko on the other hand needs to talk with James as part of a job, she can't refuse. Because of this when James and Fuji interact and talk it's always on their own accord and terms, so every interaction has more height. When Fuji and James switched pistol and sword, it was the materialization of their feelings of appreciation for each other, that they accept that unwilling relationship, of their mutual recognition and respect. You can't do that with just chat no matter how endless the chitchat is.
And I have to say... dammit, I'm "mad" not with Fuji, but with a character her actress played. Watch Girl's Encounter, interesting movie.
At first glance this like like one story you already seems plenty of times, but there are a few surprises beyond…
Miyuri was a bit delusional from beginning to the end fantasying about Tsumugi without never really thinking about and trying to understand her. Even as Miyuri herself increasingly improved her mood and social life, she never thought about questioning Tsumugi in a serious way and try to discover what was really happening with her. She felt and noticed that there were some strange things, but like I said she keep fantasying in her delusion. In the end she did nothing to Tsumugi and in retrospect it was obvious some things she did was trying to catch Miyuri's attention seeking for some help. Miyuri did the contrary, abandoned her cruelly and coldly, man, so unfair, now I'm mad with the character.

Same. I just discovered today it's listed here. MDL doesn't really have any consistency and guidelines. It's all…
It's officially a "western" production. Western original history, western desire to make it, western money, western writers, western locations (Canada). It just happened that Hiroyuki Sanada got wind of it and managed to get the Producer role. Using his position and star power the wrestled with the company behind it. It was because of him that all japanese roles are played by... japanese actors. This wouldn't be guaranteed without him. Also, with his experience and contacts after all his career years he hired japanese people who really understand the period to make all the visuals "authentic". That's why it looks so good, seriously, it looks incredible good, few times we have seems a production of this quality.
Despite having less time together, her interactions with James felt more "natural" than his interactions with Mariko. I really liked that exchange of gifts, was a "cute" moment, so I expect to see they get a bit closer and more scenes between them. I knew that she doesn't want at all to touch or be touched by him but this doesn't matter, I just wasn't expecting that she would show her appreciation for him THAT way.
I understand, it wasn't strange in that middle during those times, but still...
Didn't expect ep 4 to end with red puddles of guts everywhere, but okay, I'm kinda hyped for the war.
That "brat"... wouldn't the best strategy there be to make a failed or subpar demonstration to lead the enemy to subestime their firepower on a future battle? He doesn't know how to play the long game.

The ending left me VERY intrigued.
WHAT HAPPENED!
Anyone notices that he doesn't walk normally? He only walks like there's something on he ground bothering him. Why?
Edit: also, ins't the clock here wrong? By the clock here episode 5 aired today, but I think it'll actually air tomorrow.

They're using the "classical chinese trope" of "bad woman influence" with Kiku, aren't they?

She is not real.
She can't hurt you.
