it's because he's a really (like really) good dramatic actor. and he could make better choices with his roles. I'd say the fault lies more with his management then himself maybe. his strength lies in his character work and with the few recent ventures, the script rarely demanded him of the intensity he so excels in. though I think his newer choices are a bit better and seem more eccentric. he should be fine. why us old fans are irritated is because he's becoming a "popular actor", while in actuality he has the bearings of a great actor. many great actors have struck a good balance between the two, (kim soo hyun, ji sung, lee joong gi), he just hasn't been able to as of late.
I am so excited for it! and it's a musical! usually I won't even bother, but knowing how good a musical actor Ji Chang Wook is, I a hyped up. And he seems perfect for this role especially since it's a musical.
