So far, a good job it isn’t. There are all sorts of issues with the direction, continuity, camera work, sound etc , the kind of stuff you would expect from really old or low-budget productions. The poor actors are having to do their utmost to get the show going. How strange, it’s the same director of Itaewon Class , maybe Kim Seong Yoon was carrying it all then. 🤔
It’s ok as a time filler, but there are much better things out there.
It’s really all about where the power lies and how this is maintained, isn’t it. I have recently reviewed a Japanese drama where the FL (rookie nurse) was called stupid by the ML (doctor) from get go all the way to the end. A few (self-identified) women commented that they did not see a problem with that. It made me think that for them the FL powerlessness is not only acceptable but actually desirable. If you consider the demographics these dramas are targeting, it seems that these tropes are being replicated and maintained throughout generations of women without much change. What our grandmothers were subjected to hasn’t changed a great deal. Isn’t it so very sad when women witness other women being abused and choose not consider this an issue? Given the potential influence that this ‘target demographic’ could have on how dramas are written and directed, and what kind of dramas are selected by the big broadcasters, we could change what is considered normal, if we wanted. Imagine how amazing this would be.
Brilliant. The more women become aware of issues of power that these seemingly innocuous or desirable behaviours actually represent, the more pressure we can have on producers, writers and broadcasters.
I understand that one has to put up with cultural differences in everything one watches, but it is 2021, and Viki and the like are still purchasing licenses for series that put down women from the start to the end. The message is of accepting and normalising that a woman can and should be happy with being called idiot absolutely non-stop. That bullying behaviour is shown as acceptable and desirable. Young women would watch this and think that this is ok. Men would watch this and be reinforced in these kinds of behaviours and beliefs. This is how it becomes normalised for women to be bullied and harassed at work, and to be subjected to pay inequalities. This is how women’s confidence and self-esteem are destroyed on a daily basis. This is how women become victims of violence. As I said, it is 2021. It doesn’t matter if this is still accepted in Japan, but as Viki and others broadcast this kind of content, Viki and others are responsible for disseminating misogynistic beliefs and behaviour worldwide. As a company, Viki and others should urgently reconsider their ethical and moral code, and stop supporting and contributing to normalising the abuse of women in any way, shape or form.

When will producers stop normalising toxic relationships?
Best. Drama. Ever.
