I don't like her mother either. She hasn't changed at all throughout the years it seems, and yeah, I hope she will go through some legit character development in the further course!
one major genre: comedy people: take things too seriously, try to generate real life equivalences, generalize,…
"people are allowed to have opinions tho.."
So am I, right? And _I_ think that taking things too seriously and speaking about actual rape while you're watching a comedy series is too far fetched and out of place. Cant' remember having disallowed other people's opinions, to be honest, and I never said people pointing out stuff are generally "hating"; I distinguish among criticism, interpretation, theories, and "hate".
I hate how bong soons mother basically suggests for her daughter to rape the main guy. She tells her daughter…
"Of course if it was a male actor saying hed jump a lesbian or straight lady. Id feel damn uncomfortable because well we all know who does most of the raping in the world."
Cringing for every male reading the comment section right now, and for every female that feels weirded out by this as much as I am.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I agree with most things, especially when talking about the supporting cast,…
I think some of the people hating on her cannot understand or relate to her behavior. She was desperate as hell most of the time and her ex-boyfriend was the only thing she could hold onto after she was back. I disliked certain things she did and say, and yeah, she was bitchy, but in the further course I hoped she will realize that she has to change. She was not a bad person; just a girl doing bad things out of desperation.
I admit that I haven’t watched many dramas so far, but even if I did, I'd still criticize these types of things, even if I got used to them. The first drama I watched was "beautiology101” and it was the first time I was confronted with this phenomenon.
You’re right; she was too skinny, too. Not all weightlifters are extremely bulky, of course, but whenever she lifted the weights, I frowned a bit because to me it seemed like she doesn’t have any muscles inside her arms at all, heh.
Apparently Cho Hye Jung, who played one of Bok Joo’s friends, gained some weight for her role in this show, so it is possible to go one step further if you want to.
What Japanese dramas can you recommend? The only Japanese drama on my Plan to Watch-list is “1 Litre of Tears”.
How is getting paid to use her strength as a bodyguard not trigger the curse? I know it's a drama and I should…
I think it is because she still uses her power for the good, to protect someone's life, and does not force them to pay her. After all it's Ahn Min Hyeok's secretary who suggested the salary as far as I remember.
First off, is it me or does anyone else notice the similarities between Ahn Min Hyeok and Ji Dwi/Sam Maek Jong from "Hwarang"? They're both quite smart, have a gift of the gab and don't hesitate to say what they think. I like that!
The second episode made me curios about the case In Gook Doo tries to solve desperately. [CAUTION, THEORY AHEAD!] The perpetrator's first bride was a music teacher as far as I remember, and In Goo Doo's girlfriend seems to be a musician. If the incidents are connected to music, she might become the next victim.[/CAUTION, THEORY AHEAD!] Don’t want him to be around when he’s angry, but he is likeable as well.
I liked the second episode as much as the first one, I grinned a lot towars the end.
Whoa, the first episode was a fine mixture of humor, action, suspense, and a pinch of romantic tension. I liked Park Hyung Sik in "Hwarang", and so far I like him in this show as well. #teamahnminhyeok Hope this whole drama turns out to be as well balanced as the first episode.
Can someone help me understand?! Aren't king Jinheung and princess sookmyung both queen jisoo's children?…
Marriages between close relatives were/are meant to preserve wealth and power within the family, and the royal bloodline. This drama is still fiction so I do not know whether the writers changed things off screen, but apparently the true Ji So was married to her uncle (correct me if I'm wrong). Back then, it was common. The real Princess Sookmyung was Jinheung's half-sister, I think.
Pro
+ setting
+ costumes
+ most of the actors
+ silliness/humor
+ most of the characters and most of the plots
-> Ji Dwi, Ban Ryu, Pa Oh, Dan Se, Master Ui Hwa (…)/political confrontations and intrigues, creation of Hwarang, the Prince’s struggles (…)
+ that lovely pinch of friendship
+ action scenes
+ Ban Ryu/Soo Yeon
+ Ji Dwi/Ah Ro moments
+ Ah Ro and Sun Woo in certain situations
-> For instance, I liked Sun Woo kicking ass at the beginning and fighting Crown Prince Chang A LOT! Ah Ro was a great story teller and informant.
+ water/King assignment/equivalence, general symbolism
+ writers’ ability to generate deep and emotional scenes
+ ending
-> Ji Dwi became King. Hooray!
Contra
- Sun Woo/Ah Ro (no chemistry at all)
- the weak and frustrating love triangle as a whole
-> Ji Dwi likes Ah Ro, calls her his medicine, admits he is desperate because of her, does everything to conquer her heart -> Ah Ro does not give a crap at all, forgets he even exists sometimes, is highly obsessed of Sun Woo, calling him orabeoni most of the time.*
- constant swinging forth and back between Sun Woo and Ah Ro
-> I guess the writers wanted to deepen their relationship and make it interesting for the viewers, but I experienced their efforts as unnecessary.
- characters do not have time to reflect properly on certain events (Han Sung’s death, Sun Woo being told who his father is and that he is actually a son of a Sacred Bone) since a lot of things happen one after another
- sometimes the music
- things being brought up and become irrelevant all of a sudden
- Sun Woo is given too much credit
-> Yes, he suffered a lot and I think nearly all of you wanted things for him to change for the better, but for me it felt like an overkill going on, fortunately, the ending was legit!
- plots are unbalanced
- lack of interactions among the Hwarang
-> I really wanted them to get to know each other better, e. g. through an assignment which they only could have passed by saying as many things about their comrades as possible.
- episode 19 is a mess, seriously, too much switching, too much going on
- placing the battle for the throne in the last two episodes
- too many tears in general
- Ban Ryu/Soo Yeon ending
-> I can't even call it an open end, it was a no-end. I expected Soo Yeon's brother talking to Ban Ryu regarding this matter
- the final scene
-> Really? Riding towards the sun? REALLYREALLY?
*The romance is the thing that bothered me the most in this series, even though I see some other flaws. As I mentioned before there is no chemistry between the main couple. Furthermore, Ah Ro and Sun Woo being a couple prevents them being dynamic, and to evolve. I expected character development, but they remained static and one dimensional for a long time. I liked Ah Ro at the beginning, her being a story teller and being somewhat different. I did not like the way she treated Ji Dwi, and sometimes I expected her to react differently to the things he says and does. She still was his drive along with Sun Woo, but I wished there would have been more going on between Ji Dwi and Ah Ro than THAT. Actually, there is love square rather than a love triangle. The Princess was fond of Sun Woo, but to me, it was nothing but a device to get things done.

~ Han Sung’s death.
-> Don’t get me wrong, I was touched by it and cried heavily. However, it is predictable. The developers did not focus so much on him in the previous episodes, and suddenly he is shown so often that one can assume his death is lurking behind the corner. In addition, his death is not properly reflected upon as I told you before.
~ historical inaccuracies
-> At the beginning of every episode you are reminded that even though this story is set during King Jinheung’s time, events and characters are fictitious. I did not mind the “history mess”.
~ especially Ah Ro crying
-> Well, poor girl is a pawn, finds out who the faceless King is, is nearly executed because of this, is arrested falsely, and is used by the Queen constantly… Yeah, I would cry too! Sometimes it was pointless, though, and repetitive, but strangely I wasn’t bothered by Ah Ro's tears as much as other people.
I usually don't write negative stuff, but when Go Ah Ra frowns, she looks devilish not cute like other actresses!…
I'm sure you're not the only one out there feeling this way! I will give some other series starring her a chance in the future so I can satisfy my curiosity. As for Hwarang, I think the female lead herself is poorly written.
I usually don't write negative stuff, but when Go Ah Ra frowns, she looks devilish not cute like other actresses!…
Have you, by chance, watched other dramas starring her? I have the impression that either Hwarang is simply not her kind of drama or she is supposed to be this way, somehow different. Can't tell since I haven't watched other series she contributed to. I am not bothered by the frowning, but I think her facial expression is too plane sometimes, which is a shame.
I hope you'll find some nice dramas to watch.

Just enjoy the show, everyone.

Why does this show feel so controversial all of a sudden?
I admit that I haven’t watched many dramas so far, but even if I did, I'd still criticize these types of things, even if I got used to them. The first drama I watched was "beautiology101” and it was the first time I was confronted with this phenomenon.
