I was totally ignorant of what occurred in south korea in the 80's. I only recall the Olympics of 1988, that's it. So, it'll be interesting to see what it was like, even as far back as the 50's.

It wasn't clear. I assumed that he, the boyfriend, had an affair, or has some issues - but that doesn't explain the bruising. I hope it is made clearer as the story develops further.
