If you want a historical drama that has nothing to do with love or idol trope but everything to do with quality…
I agree. This was a complex, simplistic drama, with a beginning, middle and ending encapsulated in fourteen episodes. The only flaw was the loud singing overpowering a character's dialog, especially in the final episode.
I was feeling the drag for the last nine episodes. I jumped into episode 10 today, and now I am interested in Lawyer Cheng. He didn't get my vote previously. I hope those corrupt officials do not go after Madam Feng and her smoked ham business. Mr Fan is so evil, I would not put it past him. His nephew should to get fired from the job.
Ep 10 was a revelation for the viewers, and a turning point for Lawyer Cheng. Now, he will convert to a protagonist, and face off against those despicable officials. I hope the Imperial Court gets rid of them by episode 14.
As we know, it takes generations for the court to be cleaned up of the scumbags.
That Ma WenCai guy is the one who cheated and got the official position in the exam, by blaming Cheng RenQing…
I sensed there was some bad blood between Lawyer Cheng and Nephew when the latter arrived. Your explanation has made me interested in continuing the drama.
It is aggravating to watch these corrupt officials lie and scheme. I watched Shuai give the evidence to that Whatshisface in Lanxi Province, and tell him that the original evidences are in the archives. Of course, the latter is going to burn down the archives. Lanxi's history goes up in flames. Shaui really has no artifice, and tells the truth always. I want to slap Lawyer Cheng.
Zhang Ruoyun's character seems to have aspergers syndrome or high functioning autism
You hit the nail on the head. It was really bothering me, watching him in ep 1. I was trying to pinpoint the behavioral pattern. Thanks for the diagnosis.
Especially listening to Lawyer's motor mouth nonstop. He is what we would term, a shyster lawyer. He was annoying me in episode 1. I knew right away, he was talking bribes frfrom the Gambling House unscrupulous owner. I am just starting the drama, btw.
Tong Da Wei has a charming smile, but his permanent smirk makes him look like a puppet actor and puppet character. Tong Li Ya has a regal demeanor. Her performance is extraordinary.
The domineering mother is beyond redemption. She will become a peasant serf in her next life, to atone for her sin. She was possessive, obsessive, suffocating, stifling. She cooked, cleaned, made his bed, shopped for his groceries and clothing. She picked up women for him to marry, and gave these leeches the key to his apartment. That boy was too timid and passive around her. I am surprised she did not shower with him, and scrub his back, or jump into bed with him. She walked all over him.
