If you want a historical drama that has nothing to do with love or idol trope but everything to do with quality…
I agree. This was a complex, simplistic drama, with a beginning, middle and ending encapsulated in fourteen episodes. The only flaw was the loud singing overpowering a character's dialog, especially in the final episode.

Title Under the Microscope Spoiler
I was feeling the drag for the last nine episodes. I jumped into episode 10 today, and now I am interested in Lawyer Cheng. He didn't get my vote previously. I hope those corrupt officials do not go after Madam Feng and her smoked ham business. Mr Fan is so evil, I would not put it past him. His nephew should to get fired from the job.

Ep 10 was a revelation for the viewers, and a turning point for Lawyer Cheng. Now, he will convert to a protagonist, and face off against those despicable officials. I hope the Imperial Court gets rid of them by episode 14.

As we know, it takes generations for the court to be cleaned up of the scumbags.

That Ma WenCai guy is the one who cheated and got the official position in the exam, by blaming Cheng RenQing…
I sensed there was some bad blood between Lawyer Cheng and Nephew when the latter arrived. Your explanation has made me interested in continuing the drama.

It is aggravating to watch these corrupt officials lie and scheme. I watched Shuai give the evidence to that Whatshisface in Lanxi Province, and tell him that the original evidences are in the archives. Of course, the latter is going to burn down the archives. Lanxi's history goes up in flames. Shaui really has no artifice, and tells the truth always. I want to slap Lawyer Cheng.

It's a three-fold story, First, the tax was initially paid by all the counties in the prefecture as raw silkweight…
I forgot about Mr Fan. He has guilt and corruptions written all over his face.

The siblings are indeed a blabbermouth 😅😅😅😅😅 why they always spill secrets to the lawyer🥲🥲🥲
Sister knew Cheng was a crooked lawyer, but she blabbed for a few coins. Really? She received a demotion. 📉

The old man at the trial might be responsible for Shuai's parents' deaths.

I believe this is not martial arts drama🤔
He had the same effect in Lost in the Kunlun Mountains. He started out very irritating, then toned down, and became normal. LOL

Zhang Ruoyun's character seems to have aspergers syndrome or high functioning autism
You hit the nail on the head. It was really bothering me, watching him in ep 1. I was trying to pinpoint the behavioral pattern. Thanks for the diagnosis.

Being thin doesn't necessary make one look younger. They can look sickly and frail. It's all a psychological game in the acting profession.

If you like acting you can at least admire Zhang Ruo Yun
I agree. It might be because he looks serious in most of his dramas.

I first saw him in Wu Xin: The Monster Killer (2015), and he was startling and enigmatic as the second male lead.

Ep.4-5 are hilarious😝😝 and thank god he’s not a bad person at all, i was quite annoying to see that lawyer…
Glad to know this, because I was crossing him off my list in his first appearance at the trial.

There's no actual FL in it so far (almost halfway through). There is a female character in a pretty strong support…
Are Sister and Lawyer going to become a couple? I guess she is below his class, but he needs a down-to-earth woman to humble him.

Especially listening to Lawyer's motor mouth nonstop. He is what we would term, a shyster lawyer. He was annoying me in episode 1. I knew right away, he was talking bribes frfrom the Gambling House unscrupulous owner. I am just starting the drama, btw.

So, uh, let me put ep 7 to song. *ahem.*"I can see what's happenin'" - ""What?!""-And they don't have a clue!"…
I hope Lawyer Cheng is part of the team. I could not stand his cocksure arrogant attitude in episode 1. I ship him with the friend's Ham shop sister.

Tong Da Wei has a charming smile, but his permanent smirk makes him look like a puppet actor and puppet character. Tong Li Ya has a regal demeanor. Her performance is extraordinary.

The domineering mother is beyond redemption. She will become a peasant serf in her next life, to atone for her sin. She was possessive, obsessive, suffocating, stifling. She cooked, cleaned, made his bed, shopped for his groceries and clothing. She picked up women for him to marry, and gave these leeches the key to his apartment. That boy was too timid and passive around her. I am surprised she did not shower with him, and scrub his back, or jump into bed with him. She walked all over him.
