This is the whole backstory, I wrote the comment a few hours ago and I'm just pasting it here.
Thank you for the recap. This could have been the introduction episodes to the drama, instead of random flashbacking. The viewers would understand the relevance of the old men, Wei Yan, Lord Li, Sui Changxin, Grand Tutor Tao and Wei Qilin(Fan).
Because if the news were to spread that Wei Yan was in a intimate relationship with consort then his entire clan…

The thought just came to me. Wei Yan was a villain with principles. He married the woman of his subordinate to shelter her and her unborn son. It was a convenient marriage. He ignored her, but allowed her to be the mistress of the house. The fake son thought his stepfather neglected them. Wei Yan propped up the weak emperor, to keep the dynasty intact. If there was no Boa, the dynasty would have collapsed after the lunatic Qi Min ascended the throne.
Were Qi Sheng and Qi Shu, the last two known members of the royal family? Was that why Prime Minister Wei Yan was pushing for a marriage between Qi Shu and Xie Zheng? They could replace Emperor Qi Sheng.
I'm still confused about WeiYan, even after knowing the truth, why was he still being blamed and 'punished' when…
I was ambivalent about his character. He was a good manipulator, and he clashed with Grand Tutor Li. I wasn't sad when he left. He looked tall and handsome, nonetheless.
I finally finished the final episodes. It was not an exciting end to the drama plot. Prime Minister Wei Yan had a gentlemanly exit, and Grand Tutor Li sat quietly in the dark while his assets were confiscated. They were all talk. Wei Yan and Xie Zheng had a little sword play. It was not a duel to the death. It was like a termination of their family connection. Even the clown emperor went almost mad. Show was entertaining, overall, with a good looking cast.
Every villain so good looking haha. Even Uncle Wei.
The male cast should line up on a stage. Everyone is good looking, even the old guys. Li Dian Zun (... Mr. Jin/Jin Yuan Bao) would look handsome out of costume. He's 30 years of age.
i was shocked when qi min said oh yeah we have to kill this one, but we'll have lots of other children in the…
Qi Min is megalomaniacal and narcissistic to the bone. Qian Qian didn't even comment. She is acting like the battered subservient wife, but it looks annoying.
Emperor is a riot! Dude has shifty eyes and a weak Qi/chi. It's all so very funny! šš
Emperor has been suffering with paranoia and high anxiety. He needs some anti-anxiety medication. I feel sorry for Head Eunuch who has to serve Emperor 24/7. He lost his ear unjustly.
I would just say side characters outactex main ones for me . Like the Sui brothers acting made me loath the characters…
Very good assessment! The writers had a field day creating the Sui princes, and the two actors showed their wide acting range, and they are in their 20s.
