Ah, that's it! The 1st and 2nd Ring were totally horror (a classic in horror genre and a must watch for horror lovers I believe) but they aren't the ones I want to recommend you.

So, in the first movie and its sequeal, the setting was in the present (well, late 90's actually lol), and there was a spooky ghost/spirit called Sadako. I don't really remember the details, but she is the one behind a killing curse which was the main theme of the movies.

Have you watched it by now?
Anyway, I think it will scare you, esp if you're a beginner in horror. This is a classic in Asian horror. And Asian horror tend to be way scarier than the western (I never considered western horror as horror, they're never that scary).
