They could have used any light color, as makeup with soft colors was customary at the time, but yellow, as you highlighted with great sagacity, has a meaning, it is a subliminal narrative of the XFF, which is the heroism and nobility of the XFF's character . I feel like you, everyone felt this revolt. But in fiction, everything can be manipulated to achieve the objectives of the plot. In real life, unfortunately, there are many countries that punish children with even worse brutalities without anyone defending them.

The characters' makeup is planned according to the historical period. During the Song Dynasty (historical period of the series) women used pearls and the lightest and most natural makeup possible. I also don't like the yellow of XFF but all these historical series are made according to previously done historical research. This is not any influence from Chinese Opera(Canjun Opera, during this period), which also had its characteristic makeup, but a strong relationship with social issues. In Chinese Opera they use exaggerated colors of the warriors and each color has a meaning that is part of the theatrical narrative. But you're right, this yellow makes XFF look sick! lol
