Even though he thought he didn't love her in the beginning and was only using her, he was still respectful and wanted to help her. The latter half, we see that he has been doing all those good things even Xu Yan wasn't aware of. So not sure where is the big personality change except for him trying to win her back which was something new for him, and him taking advise from another amateur.
