Based on what I understand about the two novels for Love Rain and Love Sky this is what I know... not a major…
So after Sky and Prapai 'hook up' about a month passes before Prapai 'finds' Sky again. I believe it's when he realizes Rain is friends with Sky. That's what I read on a forum about how the novels connect (so it's a linear flow of time, it's just that we'll probably get a flashback of what happened that night on the illegal race track). I'm sure we will get an episode dedicated to their hook up, Prapai's advances and Sky maybe being able to leave without Prapai knowing how to find him during that time. As hinted in the latest episode, Prapai knows where to find Sky and he gets his contact info from Rain (which was in the trailer). So after the climax scene we saw in the trailer with Phayu 'rescuing' Rain I am sure it will transition to Sky and Prapai naturally and they'll be featured in the second half. I think we might get a mixture of couple screen time in the last episode, but that's my opinion. Hope that helps a little!
Question. Is the show divided into two parts for each couple? Or is there no division between the episodes?
Based on what I understand about the two novels for Love Rain and Love Sky this is what I know... not a major spoiler for those who watched the trailers but I'll post what I've learned.
Someone addressed this below but I wanted to add that the jump cuts in episode 4 were well done for the 'bed' scene between Phayu/Rain. We don't know how long they were engaged in 'foreplay' and what they were doing specifically during those times or for how long so you can't assume lubrication wasn't used (I think it was, just based on Phayu's vibe and definitely knowing Rain was not experienced). I think this is the most explicit thing I've written on here lmao. I was also going to post about this the other day too but someone pointed out this isn't a porno which lol THANK YOU! This scene showed plenty of intimacy which was beautiful -we don't need to see every single detail. Also I, too, am on the 'this was a mistake to start early' train but I also want to support the boys for all their hard work and watch it while it airs, but this will be painful. Anyone else counting the days?? This series has me hooked.
I really loved the first 5 episodes. They were fast-paced, hilariously on-point and super interesting to watch, especially with Ha Ri's antics to avoid being caught as Geum Hui. One of the things I also appreciated about this series was the fact that although Ha Ri obviously had budding feelings for Tae Moo when he thought she was 'Geum Hui,' she still had the space to explore her feelings after he confessed he really liked her, which I thought was nicely done and the least cliche element in this series.
I do, however, have some criticisms. Firstly, the way they unfortunately dropped or forgot about the meta-physical reference to the 'drama within a drama' aspect with the 'Be Strong Geum Hui' was sad. I thought the parallels were both refreshing and a perfect comedic element, as often there was a lot of dramatic irony we as an audience could enjoy. In this aspect, especially since Ha Ri's father ended up binging the series, I wanted to believe that was a build up for when Tae Moo introduced his grandpa to their family and they could find out they like watching it together. I'm not sure what happens in the manhwa but this seemed liked such a missed opportunity.
I also didn't like the last 20 minutes of this series, considering it was well-paced consistently throughout. It could have been done better. I'm not saying I needed everything to be tied up in a neat bow in the end. I didn't need to see them married officially. I just hoped there were more interactions between their families, because that seemed like what they were alluding to during the series but the grandpa gets sick in the last moments and there's a fast forward to a year later seemed unnecessarily rushed. They could built up and ended things differently based on everything that happened that's for sure.
I also wasn't super fond of Ahn Hyo Seop's acting here. I really loved him in 17 Again, but there was something that felt a bit stiff in his acting. It wasn't all the time, but sometimes when he was delivering his lines it felt a bit basic. I kept thinking to myself it must be because I'm overthinking it but when watching Sung Hoon and Young Seo's story line (which was magical and always intriguing!!) I realized that there was just something a bit off with Ahn Hyo Seop from time to time. Maybe it was how he wanted to give off a cool CEO vibe but it just felt bit stiff to me. Since that's my personal opinion, of course I can understand if people disagree with me.
I also wish a few things weren't glossed over as much. I mean I know this is a DRAMA but the fact that Tae Moo emotionally manipulated Ha Ri into a contract to be his fake lover, even if he apologized for the way he went about it, it's still a toxic 'power play' no matter how much you try to romanticize it. I know some people might be critical of my criticisms, considering that's the show's entire premise, but it still left me feeling not to great about it especially the way it came about and the initial reasoning behind it. In any case, I loved all the supporting cast to pieces, and absolutely adore Kim Se Jeong. I hope to see her in many more dramas in the future, especially the sequel to The Uncanny Counter. 7.5 for me!!
I finished watching this series in a few days and I have a few things I wanted to get off of my chest. First of all, this was a nicely paced drama. You'll always be at the edge of your seat especially after the first episode, and it doesn't feel unnecessarily dragged out. Thematically, it covered a lot of dark messages which I think they hit a home run on: the brutality of capitalism, the disparity of wealth distribution, and morality (vastly speaking of course, there's many sub-themes here). I think the acting is TOP NOTCH and the delivery of agony and desperation to be incredible. I felt a wave of emotions watching this series because of the sheer, abrupt and continuous violence. There were a few reasons why I didn't rate this higher than a 8.5. Especially Gi Hoon for instance. Although I can appreciate the fact that this show touched the impact of PTSD/trauma on individuals, Gi Hoon's complete 180 at the end to 'discover' who is behind the Squid Game really baffled me. Yes, seeing the old man again probably sparked his anger and frustration but he literally said before the final game he wanted to give his mom a real shop, pay off his debts, and be a better father. He was ALMOST on that damn flight and yet he pivoted around to go on some sort of mission?? I find it hard to believe he wouldn't want to be there for his daughter all things considered, especially knowing the dangers of the people behind the game. The only redeeming thing would be is Joon Ho is still alive and didn't in fact perish in the sea and has been secretly hiding to take down the people behind the game and Gi Hoon joins him. Then that would be an entirely different genre of this drama. So who knows.
I was holding back on the last 2 episodes for weeks because this series was so precious to me but I finished it today...and now that it's over in terms of finally 'completing' the drama, I'll truly never get over how incredible this series is. Rather than it being a typecast 'BL' as I've reflected about before, this is truly a romance series that happens to have queer love at the centre. I'll always come back to this drama on a rainy day, so to speak, because there's so much I loved about it. I think this deserves all the credit in the world for being the first of it's kind in the LGBTQ K-series world (in terms of length, character development and plot), and I'm so glad I was able we were able to see all of them on-screen find their own happiness's. I rated this a 10/10 even though I still wished we saw the process of Tae Kyung's love for who we know who he ended up with. I wish there was a little more exploration behind this because I think it was needed. Other than that, I'm totally in love with this series. I hope we get a second season (if done well!!) and that we see more of Teacher Hae Bit with his love interest (for anyone who has read the manga, his story with Lee Taesung is just SOOO good!!).
This damn drama playing with my heart like a F**KING violin lol I can't. I can't watch the rest of episode 15 until the finale appears. LIKE WHY DO THIS TO US. This should have been 20 episodes or the last episode better be close to an hour or I'm throwing hands.
Takumi-kun was the best I just might watch it next for the umpteenth time lo.l;
Lol I'm so glad people know about Takumi-kun still!! It was the first BL I watched. It's been years since I've seen it. I'm thinking of marathoning a few of the films again.
I loveeeeee the Takumi-Kun series, I still watch all three movies (the first one doesn’t count hah) on a regular…
OMG!! When I used to re-watch them I pretended the first didn't exist either lol. I totally agree! It showed so much intimacy and love between the couple which was I think was rare for Japanese BL's at the time because most Japanese BL's ended in tragedy. For it's time it was definitely a wonderful adaptation. I actually feel inspired to watch it again!! It's been years but at one point I was obsessed. And thank you! Light On Me is just SO good.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but I really think this goes beyond the typical typecast 'BL' program I feel like a lot of us are used to (I say this as someone who has been watching BL with the very slim options we had back in the Takumi-kun days, shout out for those who remember and know my reference. Lol and yes I've been watching BL for a decade or so now). Surely it has an often cliche, but endearing way of sharing a 'high school romance triangle' but I think that is it's strength. It doesn't feel like an overly commercialized, campy, fan-service, show. It just feels like a romance/youth/drama that happens to have LGBTQ characters and themes/issues which I find to be beyond refreshing and realistic (but also of course dreamy and funny too --it really has so many great elements). I don't necessarily need Tul/Max passion (I mean their chemistry is fire and I love them) for me to feel like this is a genuine love story, I just feel like, in its own way it's re-creating/re-imagining what we see as 'BL.' I'm really saluting these writers because they're taking popular elements from mainstream K-dramas and are simply placing them in a world where there's queer love, the questioning of one's sexuality, and living your life as authentically as you can. Depending on how next week's episodes go (and really at this point I just don't want a cliffhanger ending), but this truly is changing so much up. There are Thai dramas of late that are going away from the engineer/or music University student cliche, but of the Korean BL's I've seen this year (and especially Light On Me), they're incredibly impressive. That is not to say I don't appreciate the unique charm of Thai BL's, but I've been wanting more nuanced story telling and Taiwan and Korea seem to be hitting it out the park these days. In any case, I like how formulaic Light On Me is, but at the same time it's keeping us all engaged. The production staff and writers really are doing something not only special but also paradigm shifting and I hope we see more stories like this.
Making the viewers think Nam Goong might be interested in Soo Hee, while he's been secretly into her crush.. now…
Yes, the possibility is low for sure lol. And tbh I actually prefer the soft, friendship vibe between Nam Goong and everyone else. I never felt like need to 'couple' him up with anyone just because the story itself has the discovery of romance in various themes. I just hope they don't pair him up with a 'changed So Hee' because Nam Goong deserves so much better. He's such a charming, respectful, and considerate person.
Shinwoo's sincerity is honestly like a beacon of light. He's just so precious... knowing nothing is guaranteed in love but still wanting to stay by the person he loves during his happiest and toughest moments is just so pure and beautiful. I still believe Taekyung will be his requited love. Especially after he told TK that he would find someone who will love him wholeheartedly (I couldn't help but think this is a foreshadow especially since TK's inner monologue about SW being there "all along"... all signs are pointing friends to their coupling).
First of all, I don't want ANY small redemption ark for her. I don't want any more screen time dedicated to her unless she's accountable for what she did and even then I don't want to see her more than a few minutes in the last 3 episodes (though I highly doubt it considering she adds tension). It may not register to her completely about what she did out of pure selfishness, but just a reminder for anyone who wants to be even slightly sympathetic towards her:
1) Purposefully 'outing' Taekyung (and indirectly Daon) which is NEVER okay (she showed that picture to let the 'nature' of their relationship be 'questioned' in which she fully knew what she was doing given global queerphobia and discrimination). 2) Thinking that the only way to pull Taekyung away from him because she whole heartedly believed it was a one-sided love was to put Taekyung in a vulnerable situation to the point where she wanted them to fully break apart. She ANTICIPATED this folks (so why the hell cry?? because YOU GOT CAUGHT), I can't even begin to describe how evil that plotting was. Maybe it was a bit impulsive but she thought of how it would all work out to her benefit in the end. 3) She didn't own up to, apologize, or even take accountability for her actions. Instead, she made excuses (her 'all for love' argument is toxic and childish). 4) She had the audacity to hope that Daon would understand her intentions when it was rooted in outing these guys and hopefully isolating Taekyung in the first place. I can't even begin to describe how hateful it really all is.
Also! If Nam Goong is even remotely paired up with her romantically I swear to goodness I'll throw an ethics book at these writers. She needs to completely detach herself from this small circle and do some much needed soul searching. Her thinking that somehow allowing people to talk about her behind her back instead of Daon is far from noble. I'm so proud of Daon for taking a stance, as I thought he would. But So Hee really is awful.
same! It's highly unlikely that we'll get a season 2, especially with Korean Bl series but I think people are…
I so agree!! Since Korean BLs are starting to more prominently enter the scene ( I mean aside from being the longest K-BL made thus far), I highly doubt there would be a second season. I've watched a few terrible Thai BL sequels (not all are bad, but there's a few I can think of and I just wished they had stopped at the first or even second series. Even if the actors chemistry is good the plot is just messy or not good). But I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. After reading some comments I thought about it a bit and especially after watching some fan made videos/re-watching the episodes released so far again I realized that Shinwoo and Taekyung already have a great foundation to become more than friends if they wanted to, which I know they will when Taekyung does a bit more soul searching. I also really love how Shinwoo has become so much more open. And I totally agree the last 2 episodes have been incredible. He's shown so much maturity and support. In no way can you compare people, but if we're talking about the way Daon has been treating Taekyung (even though I am sympathetic to Daon, his journey is definitely a complex) versus the way Shinwoo is there for Taekyung, who would have been crying by himself no doubt... just really tugs at my heart strings. I don't need a plot twist. I just want them to be happy together. But yes it would be more concerning if Daon and Taekyung got together first and then broke up in terms of a rebound situation. But Shinwoo, as you said is more than that. He's a true love that's for sure.
Also, maybe an unpopular opinion but I don't think Shinwoo will be a rebound because he's always been there. He's always piqued Taekyung's interest even if it was subconscious. If Taekyung and Daon started dating and broke up because Daon couldn't handle the constant rumors THEN I'd be worried about Taekyung rebounding. But I think we must not forgot all the sweet moments Taekyung has had with Shinwoo too. Shinwoo has also had as much screen time as Daon so when Shinwoo and Taekyung get together I feel like it'll be a natural progression. There have also been many times Shinwoo has expressed his interest in staying by Taekyung's side. This isn't the first time.
Plus, and this is just my opinion of course, although I know Taekyung likes Daon I feel like it's a little less than a friendship 'like' and even less of an intense romantic love. It's probably somewhere in between. Maybe it could have developed if they got to know one another but I don't think it goes beyond that. Besides, and please don't hate me for this, but Taekyung fell in love with the 'image' Daon has (despite of course knowing as he admitted what he was like), so I think it wasn't as deep of a love as he could share with Shinwoo, who will be the one who cherishes and commits himself to his partner. This is not to say Taekyung's feelings aren't genuine but I do think they are surface level.
I'm also sure it'll be highly unlikely we'll get a season 2. Production cost is one thing but getting the entire cast together again might be a process. Besides waiting a year for a cliffhanger ending without resolve and confirmation we are getting the same cast for a season 2 would hurt too much. I'm sure they will be able to let the plot flow without it feeling too rushed. Even if there's only a handful of episodes left. I have belief that Shinwoo will proceed with pursuing Taekyung soon, especially since I'm sure Daon won't regret his decision (sadly, as we know because of the pressures he's under) until he sees Taekyung happy with Shinwoo. Next episode will probably be a defining moment when Daon continues to take a step back I'm sure and in that moment Shinwoo WILL start being a bit bolder.
Great analysis I think you're pretty correct, though I wonder if we'll get a late intro of a new character to…
There could be some curve balls? I feel like this might be generally where the plot goes but something else could definitely happen. But I'm 99% sure we're getting a Shiwoo and Taekyung ending. I was thinking of the anime/manga called Peach Girl as well as Hana Yori Dango and it reminded me a bit of certain elements of Light On Me which make it possible for a Shiwoo and Taekyung coupling. I love Namgoong's character. He's such a loyal friend and is super sweet. I hope we get a small glimpse into his dating life but if we don't I understand. I think he could even be bi or pan who knows. He seems to also talk to that teacher a lot too... I think it would be inappropriate if they were in a relationship given their status as student and teacher (I'm not fond of this BL trope), but I can see Namgoong having a small crush on the teacher. All in all I hope for an ending that isn't rushed. And that Sohee gets put in her place because the girl is literally going off the deep end.
That Is why I could never be in a relationship with someone like Da-On, because he'd always be putting everyone…
This!! I keep coming back to read people's comments and this resonates with me. Taekyung was baring out his heart to Daon and the moment someone else needed his attention he just easily dips from an important conversation. I agree with all your points, especially the moment he took off the bracelet Taekyung got him and then aggressively moved his hand away from him. I know Daon has a lot going on and I'm sympathetic towards him (seeing as we're probably going to see him repress his emotions more) but treating someone like that, especially since he knows Taekyung has been waiting for a reply... and he still can't make him a priority even for a moment is just sad. It was those moments for me that made me realize yes... Daon will be an unrequited love.
Also, I'm all for healthy space between partners and friends but this really... it was insensitive to say the least. That's why I like Shiwoo. Even if he has had his own struggles he's still incredibly loyal and caring. Yes, he pushed Taekyung away in the beginning but knowing his past and their connection it makes sense. Shiwoo wants Taekyung to be happy even if it's not with him and that alone makes me root for him because that kind of selflessness is what true love is. I also can't wait to see Namgoong confront Sohee again because that was his name on her caller ID during the preview. It kind of appears like she regrets doing something (I'm almost sure she leaked that damn photo) and I'm sure Namgoong will say something to her again.
I do, however, have some criticisms.
