I'm probably very wrong, but the vibes I've been getting from Aeoy's behavior from all the past episodes so far is that he has a massive crush on Gene. But instead of openly pursuing him in a normal way, he's feigning an attraction for Nubsib as a ruse and purposely instigating conflict between the two of them so he can make his move on Gene without his rival getting in his way.
This is why Nubsib is so on edge whenever he sees them interacting and keeps telling Gene to stay away from him. He knows Aeoy is interested in Gene, not to mention, Nubsib has been quite calculating himself thus far in pursuing Gene and it would be impossible for him not to notice someone else using similar methods towards the person he loves. If this is all wrong, then I just wrote my own novel lol
So I went in with no real expectations, never read the novel, but I knew it would be a light-hearted romance. On a surface level, it was a decent production, but the drama as a whole was underwhelming and probably shouldn't have been 13 episodes. I considered dropping it around the 3rd episode, but made myself continue watching. The acting, filming, and editing definitely needed improvement. For example, the fight scenes. They were so poorly done from the acting to the editing. Sometimes the sound effects they used for punches made me laugh because it really didn't match. There was little attention to detail at times for scenes which felt like novice mistakes on the production side. And the "live" performances would've been better if they were actually live.
The main couple Solo and Gui were cute together, but their chemistry was on and off for me. I understood the characters' personalities from what novel readers had mentioned, but there's no denying their acting was lackluster and rigid. Many times Solo's car had my attention more than him and Gui. Surprisingly Kao, a character I originally thought I wouldn't like in the beginning, ended up being my favorite since Boss was clearly the better actor from the entire cast and could show various emotions.
And finally, the side story with the doctors and siblings had me very confused. They spent so much time having Dr. Petch string everyone along into his drama and it went nowhere. I don't feel that storyline was necessary given how poorly written it was. All that time could've been used to instead better develop the main characters. Not much was happening at all with the main couple until the final episodes where they threw in drama then quickly glazed over the issues just to wrap up the story. Overall, it was an ok drama, but I personally wouldn't watch this again.
Aside from the beautiful cinematography from filming outdoors, I think one of my favorite moments from this entire drama was when Ji Chong threw Ma Zhai Xing into the water trough when she was acting up. Should've done that every time she was being irrational and naive, but then she would probably be swimming in every episode.
I just knew the moment they showed Thorn propose to his gf in the beginning of the season, they would likely show his wedding instead of Tharn and Type's as a twist, but a part of me hoped I was wrong. You center a whole season around a 7-year couple slowly making their way towards marriage, have rings plastered everywhere in the freaking intro and ed, then don't even show said wedding to viewers at the end unless they pay to watch the special episode? So shameless, yet not surprised at all. This whole season was a quick cash grab and it showed in the sloppy production. And speaking of 7 years, it felt like every episode took 7 years for me to finish due to how poor the writing was.
The whiplash I got from Type planning a sick kidnapping scheme and threating to break Fiat's leg in one episode to suddenly becoming ordained as a monk in another was too much for me. Is he a criminal or a filial man of peace? Pick a side please. Tharn's irrational behavior was too much as well and felt very disjointed overall. As much as I love Mew and Gulf, they alone could not save this trainwreck and I'm just glad it's over.
If you're not going put in the effort or care into a production, don't bother making another season.
Episode 11: I must say this was one of the better episodes, although the bar for a decent episode wasn't exactly high at this point. Half of the episode was spent on Tharn/Type sulking which probably could've been shortened since they've already wasted so much time this season. Overall though, this episode structure is what the previous episodes should have been: Tharn & Type-focused only. It's a shame that they chose the very end of the series to do this.
Putting the main couple on the backburner to instead put everyone else in the forefront was detrimental to this series. The inclusion of so many side characters/couples and filler moments was unnecessary. There wasn't any real purpose for their appearances and not much of a connection was made with all the newcomers. If the sponsor really felt the need to promote their actors, then it should've been only one other couple so they could properly develop both storylines while also giving Tharn and Type the screentime they deserved.
When it comes down to it, Mew and Gulf's acting/chemistry is literally the only thing holding this season together since sadly everything else failed them; whether it's the writing, directing, or editing. They deserved better than this messy production and I doubt the final episode will be able to cover up these major flaws. I really wanted to like this season, but it's hard to ignore so many shortcomings.
Again wow so negative comments about s2 should i start this or not ? i really loved season 1 ...
I'd say give it a shot, at least for a few episodes to see how you feel about it. While it can be helpful to read the opinions of other viewers before spending time on a show, I've learned that ultimately the best judge is yourself. There are plenty of dramas that people have hyped up and said are great, but I personally didn't enjoy and vice versa. For me, the first season of TharnType is more interesting because it was at least centered more around the main leads. This second season is quite different with other characters getting more screen time together than the main leads, so it feels like not much is happening.
My theory was that at first the idea was to milk TharnType (Mewgulf) but then things changed to hype up the "6…
Yeah, the other actors have definitely taken the forefront. Since the beginning of s2, all I felt was that the story was at a standstill with nothing really going on, yet now they're suddenly going to cram the little TharnType content/plot they had into the final episodes. If that were the case, then like you said, it probably should've been just a mini series with only a few episodes so it would've been more focused on the main couple. At least so it wouldn't seem so insincere and such a lazy wrap up from the production team. There's been so much wasted time on the other characters and filler scenes with the story going nowhere.
They could've saved us the unnecessary drama and had Leo and Fiat sit down and have a serious talk with each other for once so the story could move on to something more interesting, like, I don't know, the main couple?? Just one talk to express their true feelings and it wouldn't have become so messy. Even better, it wouldn't have taken up so many episodes.
None of Fiat's actions have been surprising to me since he's supposed to be the one to rile things up, but Leo.... I'm still mad he told Fiat to give up on Type because he has a boyfriend, then turned around and gave Fiat Type's personal information so he could harrass/stalk him at his home; all the more encouraging Fiat's obsessive, intrusive behavior. The disappointment was too real. Even though he stopped Fiat at the bar, for him to be so upset during episode 9's events just made me laugh since he himself greatly contributed to the current situation along with his silence and avoidance of owning up to his feelings. Can't even say Fiat doesn't care at all because he questioned Leo multiple times afterwards yet he still wouldn't say anything clearly. Fiat won't say things out loud either. And now we have some Tharn and Type drama brewing ahead since nobody in this drama knows how to communicate properly. Neither Type nor Phu told Tharn about Fiat entering their home when they talked to him, so things will definitely get messier with the upcoming events next episode.
The season is almost over and all I'm feeling is that the production behind this series just wanted to milk TharnType for all its worth. They sprinkled a little fanservice in the beginning episodes to bring in more viewers, but then called it a day with the actual story progression for the rest of the series and put others in the forefront. I honestly don't know what this season is really about, except that they want the end to be marriage.
To be honest I haven't really watched kdramas in quite some time since I found myself losing interest, but... if you're telling me my queen Kim So Yeon is back and with Lee Ji Ah AND Eugene?? Then I'm all in and my break is over lol
And isn't is weird that they would focus on a romance for Ning Wei Kai after all the bad stuff he did in earlier…
I'm sorry to tell you that Ning Wei Kai does not end up in hell burning fire for eternity like you're hoping, in fact he gets the complete opposite which was one of my biggest gripes with this drama. His relationship with Grace continues to progress and at times even takes the forefront with more screen time compared to the main leads. It was a huge disappointment seeing him get a happy ending considering how twisted and scheming his character was. They could've chosen anyone, but instead they really made Grace end up with the suspected murderer of her dead boyfriend.
This review was perfect. I am glad I read it thoroughly because everything you said is everything that I do not…
Thanks for taking the time to read my review, I'm glad it was helpful to you :) And I definitely agree with your sentiments about waiting. In this case, waiting wasn't a fun experience for me especially considering how long this drama was. 40 episodes with the main event still not occuring yet is pretty draining. The synopsis may have been correct, but it also felt misleading considering how they structured the story and crammed everything at the very end.
I initially started watching this drama because I like the main leads, but I've watched about 8 episodes so far and I can't say I'm entertained. It feels like there's a crucial spark missing from the story to make it interesting because all the episodes so far have felt very slow with not much going on, a bit repetitive.
This is also my 3rd time seeing Alan Yu in a drama and while I want him to do well as an actor, I feel he's consistently stiff and expressionless as a main lead. In some parts it's passable when his characters are supposed to hide their feelings, but that can only take one so far. I hope he improves his acting in the future because it's hard to find a connection or feel invested in any of his characters and their relationships when there's zero emotion resulting in zero chemistry with the female leads he's paired with. I confess I dropped the last drama I tried to watch with him as the main lead because of his expressionless acting.
Yukee Chen is both charming and cute as the female lead, she's the main reason I wanted to check out this drama, but sadly I will likely drop this in the near future if it continues this boring route. It's a shame because I wanted to like this.
And isn't is weird that they would focus on a romance for Ning Wei Kai after all the bad stuff he did in earlier…
Yeah, it was very strange how they suddenly shifted focus to Ning Wei Kai and made it seem like they wanted viewers to root for his love story despite all the scheming he had been doing. It was already bad enough that he and Grace took over a good portion of the drama's episodes when they aren't even the main leads.
Can anyone tell me which episode is Ian Yi in? I’m not quite done with the drama yet but I still haven’t seen…
The character he's listed as is the friendly student on the train who appears from the end of episode 15 until episode 17, but it's not him. He was originally intended to be in this drama, but there was some conflict/miscommunication issues from both sides during the casting process which eventually led to him being dropped and someone else taking the role. This is the only translated article I've seen about it, if you're interested:
I believe there's another link for the raw chinese version floating around on this page that someone else posted as well. I personally can't read chinese, so I've been using a translator to read through the chapters. If you don't mind reading auto-page translations of the novel or can read chinese then you're in luck :)
For anyone wondering how Xie Xiang passed the medical examination at the military academy on the first episode:
It turns out that in the novel Xie Xiang bribed the doctor with a gold bracelet. Mystery solved lol The first time I watched, I was really curious and it was bothering me how they didn't show or tell us viewers how she managed to get out of that situation then just carried on like nothing happened.
And the "gold" bracelet was actually a fake. Xie Xiang told Tan Xiao Jun that even if the doctor were to realize it was fake, he would be unable to go after her because in doing so he would also have to reveal the fact that he willingly took a bribe in the first place. Xie Xiang is a clever lady lol
What's this about the kiss scenes being censored? I could have sworn I have seen cdramas in the past with lots…
I don't think it's necessarily that kissing itself is banned in cdramas, but has more to do with this particular adaptation that's in a military setting. I don't know all the exact details myself, but I did read somewhere that the producer was sad about the cuts. He said about 90 minutes worth of material they filmed was cut off due to strict regulations and most of that footage was full of romantic scenes at the military academy.
On a forum, someone mentioned that the producer also recently made a post on weibo after many fans were pleading for them to release the footage and said, "The scenes that had been modified due to regulations can not be re-released. Please understand that it is not appropriate for any military personnel to be shot intimate. They will pay more attention in the future and strictly follow the guidelines from the general administration."
So I'm guessing it's more because the main leads are supposed to be military soldiers and any intimacy between them, especially kissing, was considered inappropriate. Plus she is cross-dressing as a man, so they might've also taken that into account for cutting it as well since that would mean two "men" were kissing. Not sure though. It's a shame we won't get to see everything they filmed, the one kissing scene that was leaked was pretty cute. It was obvious in some areas of the episodes that there had been cuts, but a few romantic scenes they did cut were still shown in flashbacks and during the the ending credits though such as when Xie Xiang and Gu Yanzheng danced together as well as the time Gu Yanzheng was helping her onto her bed at the academy after she had been injured, so at least they tried to still incorporate some of what we missed. Fans also have the behind-the-scenes cuts to look at too, Bai Lu and Xu Kai are too cute together.
