It is a standalone drama, no need to watch anything first

I think that what we sometimes glimpse behind Zanghai’s eyes is exactly that.
He is of course a kind and compassionate person at heart. But while Zanghai may be able to pretend to be carefree with his shifu, no one can stay completely sane after going through what he has been.
He must be on edge of insanity but he has a purpose and it’s keeping him grounded for now. Let’s see where it leads him, I am so excited to see how his character develops

I don’t mean to break anyone’s bubble here but it was an actual form of torture in the Ming dynasty. Sometimes they would skin people alive, and sometimes it was done post-mortem as symbolic humiliation.

mentally unstable . He wears so many masks, he probably doesn’t remember what his real self is like anymore. He only exists for revenge, which is of course not healthy. Poor guy

After today’s episodes I am convinced that Zanghai is a little bit of a psychopath.
Whether he did actually lose control after he saw “the trophies” and planned to kill the Duke, or whether he was being calculating and trying to bait the mask - either way this guy has lost it. Can’t really blame him after what he’s been through

Some netizens are saying that ZH's entire plan all along was not to kill the marquis but to lure out the masked man. But idk, I feel like ZH acted rashly cause 1) he had no reason to assume he had 2 more enemies 2) he was affected after seeing his parents in the basement 3) he is young and he was literally saved and raised for this one purpose.
On the other hand, they showed that ZH was very smart even as a kid. Also, he wouldn't have planned to kill the marquis and escape without burying his parents. But he also might simply have decided to deal with this matter later.
There's also a middle ground. ZH might have decided to simply try and kill the guy - if he succeeds, that's a win. But if he is stopped by the masked man - he gets to learn who his true enemy is.
In conclusion, I don't know what to think anymore lol Just waiting for more episodes

I am not sure that guy learnt anything from anyone, he only had the tools. Zang Hai literally had to explain to him how to skin him properly cause Guanfeng had no idea what he was actually doing

Well yeah that’s the point I was trying to make. Have to agree about GJ 😅 Doing a BL is not enough to jumpstart one’s career. With a certain amount of luck it can give your career a push but the rest is up to talent and hard work

I feel like there’s a huge gap between what is ACTUALLY happening in Chinese drama land and what international audiences THINK is happening there. I can’t count how many times I have seen fans on international platforms genuinely hype up actors/dramas for being super big in China when they actually aren’t and may actually be struggling to find employment . My guess is that happens because C drama international demographic mostly consists of BL and CP lovers and that’s typically all the content they consume. Add to that a lack of access to Chinese sns and you get a misinformed audience existing in their CP/BL bubble who would never believe you when you tell them about Beitang Moran

I am sorry to say this, but Xiao Zhan got so much attention for his portrayal of WWX not thanks to but despite the CP. He did so well that he was able to even compensate for his co-actor’s shortcomings in the acting department . And his first breakthrough role was Beitang Moran, where he didn’t even get the girls. Look at all the Chinese actors doing CP to promote their dramas - it gets them nowhere. Cause you can only build a career on your own merit, doing CP can only bring some temporary hype at best

If doing a BL guarantees success why only Xiao Zhan is the one working with big name directors and leading projects? So what happened to all the other actors who did BL , where is their “guaranteed” success? 😂 Let me help you , it’s not there because the only “guarantee” of a successful career is hard work (and a certain amount of luck). Xiao Zhan is the most prominent young actor in China right now for good reason
