Day for Night have announced they’ll release it in UK and Irish cinemas on 8 November. I was expecting a bigger distributor, not an Asian cinema specialist, considering it’s a mainly UK production by UK staff. But, on the upside, it’s a distributor that cares about the cinema experience (and about accessibility for people with hearing or sight loss) and won’t send it direct to streaming.
Yes, in South Korea and maybe some other countries in which it was already released in cinemas long ago. See https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/923344/watch?translate=false&locale=KRWhereas…
I can only find festival screenings in Northern America, so it appears the movie still isn’t licensed there. If you don’t mind it being standard-def, the South Korean DVD has English subtitles. But it could yet get a direct-to-streaming release in HD in the US, I’d guess most likely on MUBI for a movie like this.
It won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes, so I’m sure it will. It’s coming to UK and Irish cinemas on just 30 August this year.
I just saw this has a UK distributor now, I'm so excited!
It’s been so long since the license announcement that I thought Picturehouse had given up on it and would send it direct to video, but it’s finally coming in August. As usually happens in this country, when you have to wait for ages for anything, whether it’s buses or the return of Chinese art-house movies to cinemas, two are coming along in quick succession, as “Black Dog” from Cannes this year is also releasing in August.
I don’t know if you can specifically because I don’t know where you are, but it’s coming soon to cinemas in the US and Canada, the UK and Ireland, and possibly other countries at around the same time in the next two months (see my comment above). For other countries, you could try searching for the title and the country and see if anything turns up.
Now in cinemas in the UK (and Ireland?). Descriptive subtitles and audio description are available. Locations are listed at https://www.day-for-night.org/next-sohee
Whereas in the UK, for example, it’s only just been released in cinemas, so the home release is still a few months off. Though the movie premiered in 2022, it wasn’t released nationally in South Korea till 2023 and still getting cinema releases in other countries this year.
It’s now out in UK and Irish cinemas from Modern Films; at least some locations are listed at http://modernfilms.com/evildoesnotexist but check your local art houses if you don’t see any of them listed and let them know about it if they’re not playing it.
does anyone know how I can watch this in the US, frustrating it's not available yet??
There’s a screening on 3 May in LA with Hamaguchi. I’d guess the national release will roll out after that, but I haven’t found a date for it. The most one can do for now is pay attention to the social accounts of its co-distributors: http://filmswelike.com (for Canada) http://janusfilms.com http://bit.ly/m/sideshow
Though it was released earlier in some countries, it’s not out nationally in Japan till a few days from now, on 26 April, so a May release is not long to wait in relation to that.
It opened in New York this weekend http://ifccenter.com/films/egoist with more locations in at least the US to follow. Paying attention to the distributor’s Facebook Page http://facebook.com/StrandReleasing seems the only way to find out about them as neither its web page for the movie nor its X account have been updated with any.
No, not the same day as a world premiere in Cannes. The typical order is world premiere in Cannes/Berlin/Venice, screenings in other festivals, national cinema releases in some countries, then online releases. Some skip the local cinema release and go directly online in some countries or have a simultaneous cinema and online release. But premiering in Cannes makes movies more likely to have full cinema runs than if they premiered anywhere else.
Do not worry, there are private festivals film critic viewings where this movie is shown, before it gets sent…
And it’s been played in many other public screenings at festivals worldwide since its premiere in Un Certain Regard (including near me), not only private industry ones (though many were in the last six months). MDL’s rule is to use the date of the first public screening, so that people who saw the movie in previews can rate it.
Check your nearby theaters to see if it's playing. Cineplex in Canada often have korean film screenings
They are often distributed by Well Go USA https://wellgousa.com so you might want to follow or keep checking that company’s SNS accounts. NEON and other less specialist distributors are also possibilities for this, though.
Though, if it’s even being released in UK cinemas, I’m sure it will be released in many other countries, if some months later and maybe direct to home media.
I recommend creating an account at https://mubi.com/t/web/global/Od66GsFR then clicking the + at https://mubi.com/en/gb/films/next-sohee
Even if you cancel your subscription before you’re charged, you can still get an email alert when anything added to your watchlist becomes available.
It recently had two screenings in Australia https://www.sff.org.au/program/browse/black-dog and I’m sure it will be licensed there before too long.

The Page also posted about (but didn’t actually link to) this interview with Matsunaga for the release http://gaycitynews.com/interview-egoist-director-daishi-matsunaga
Meanwhile, http://www.magnumfilmsglobal.com/the-moon-thieves has dates and locations for Oceania and Northern America.
It will be released in the UK with English subs “soon”, according to https://www.facebook.com/Kmovies.UK/posts/pfbid02EFc3BHzCnJPBXMxy4enHgUeVhtf5ui42WZRMBocexPTpSiz28WBJpYAdBJVXPEWDl – and that distributor tends to release Korean movies only a few months after South Korea.
I’m sure it will also be released with subs in other English-speaking regions.
