To be honest, the problem with Overdo isn't just the director. The plot itself is incredibly cheesy. The whole family drama involving the male lead feels like something I've randomly come across in countless TikTok clips; I can't even count how many similar audio dramas I've heard with the exact same storyline. I think they were aiming for that short-drama style, but it doesn't quite land.

They rewrote the novel plot and removed the red-flag setting from the male lead, but still tried to keep the typical dominant CEO short-drama style like forced kisses and over-the-top dialogue that make his character feels out of place without a clear image. As a result, the female lead ends up becoming the red-flag character instead, making her less likable and causing viewers to feel less sympathy for her compared to the novel

The dialogue is also super cringe, which makes it nearly impossible for the actors to deliver a natural performance.

That said, the director really isn't very skilled, but his historical works have never been this bad before. The Princess's Gambit's directing is ok; it's just the writing that is so bad. So I'm hoping Fusheng falls into the better half of his portfolio. Also, aspects like editing, music, and promotional materials including that AI-generated intro are usually handled by an outsource production company, so we can't pin the entire failure on the director.

This drama is so stingy with promotional stuff. Almost zero content, and the only official still is the birthday post for Qin Tianyu. I need a trailer to see Yi Jun's directing for this drama. I could tell from the Overdo trailer that the drama wouldn't satisfy me, and I was right, but it also had plot and dialogue issues, not just directing. I read the script of Fusheng and fell in love with Ao Chi and Sha Lou. Please don't ruin them, Yi Jun.
