I think he brought yeon woo to man weol before any of this happened. Which earned her trust. Either chung myung betrayed man weol (he was going to marry the princess anyway but flirted with man weol with a ulterior motive, like catching her gang of thieves) or was forced to marry the princess. That part is not exactly clear yet. Yeon woo seema to be caotured and hanged. And her gang must have died in the hands of the royal soldiers. Man weol maybe killed the princess.
