I think an important event is when Bae jue realised Shanggu is capable of bearing the responsibility of 3 realms when he got to know that she allowed other goddesses in his mansion to kind of transfer their pure happiness to make the tigers demons happy. He also realised even though Shanggu is spoiled a bit she has a good heart. Then it was a gradual process to love from the things happened in Mount lookout. What i felt is this bae ju is not exactly the same bae ju we initially saw in first arc. This bae ju is broken hearted, and is forced to do things he did not have any intention to do so. He took her memories so she will not remember though. Have not watched the future episodes yet, but according to what i heard he removed memories up to her going to devils realm. So only after she came back from there even bae jue and shanggu kind of truly expressed their feelings. So currently for shanggu its basically a crush they had. And bae jue has given up. He doesn't even have to go through this route of Qing mu and Houch didn't meet & never fell in love as was in his initial plan.

I think qing mu is like that. He cherished the time he had and loved her till his last day. Qing mu amd houchi is live together and die together type, while bae jue is sacrificing type. Even Shangu. The drama represents all kinds of love IMO.
