Females don't need to be "feminine", by the way.
I agree that there is a lot of room between feminine and masculine. However, female leads in K-dramas are more are more similar to your stereotypical truck driver: mean, loud, aggressive, etc. Those are masculine traits espoused only by lowly men. Those traits are not attractive in a woman (or a man). Korean women are actually not like that!

What's worse, those awful traits are being shown as examples of being strong and independent. Being loud and rude doesn't mean you're strong or independent, but it could certainly mean you're weak and insecure about yourself and are trying to compensate.

Being feminine doesn't entail being weak, naive, stupid, clumsy or docile. It's about behavior, not personality.

The King: Eternal Monarch, The Guest, Train, Designated Survivor: 60 Days, Witch's Court, Peninsula (film), etc. Those are the examples that come to my mind right now.

The typical female lead in current K-dramas is usually an unfeminine mean woman with narcissistic traits who treats others like s***, especially men. Her awful personality is presented as quirky and her being "strong" and "independent." Fortunately, romcoms' female leads are not always like that. Korean women are not like that at all, at least in my experience.

This is a really good article. It also made me discover new dramas with interesting characters. Given 2020 is a bad year for dramas (and everything, tbh), that's exactly what I needed.

"Ma Rin is in the middle of being an alcoholic or riding the Korean binge drinking culture."

Very well put. There's barely any difference... :D

It's a bit unrelated, but I googled the actresses mentioned in this article, and couldn't help but notice their heights (mostly between 165 and 170 cm, or 5'5 and 5'7).

Now, I'm not really into this heightism thing, but these girls look really small in the pictures (around 160 cm or 5'3). Do Chinese stars tend to add extra height to official profiles? I am aware that Korean and Japanese stars usually add between 3 and 5 cm (between 1 and 2 inches), but in the case of Chinese stars it seems to be way too much.

I may be wrong and camera angles may give that impression, but still...

Great article!

I have never watched a Chinese drama, so this article was very much needed. Thank you very much!

I am under the impression that C-dramas are generally not as great as K-dramas or even J-dramas. Is that correct or only a misconception?

Title Kyoufu Shinbun Spoiler
yeah, the whole origin story had no place in a short show like that...
Exactly. They could have just made it from 5 to 10 minutes and that's it.

Title 24 Japan
The original version is one of my favorite TV series ever. While I don't believe it will live up to the standards set by the US series, I hope it will be a very good drama. My main concern, however, is that they could have chosen a much better 24 season to remake, such as season 5.

Also, having a female candidate for prime minister in Japan doesn't make any sense. A buraku candidate would be a good equivalent to original 24's David Palmer.

Very interesting and informative! This also reminds me of Money Heist :D
The first two seasons were great. Seasons 3 and 4 were an utter disgrace to the series, especially season 4. They should end it already.

P.S. Spanish-speaking Pakistani hackers hacking the whole Spanish government and remaining undetected for months? LMAO, give me a break!

Title Peninsula
Good movie! It doesn't live up to the standards set by the prequel, but it's entertaining.

Title Steel Rain 2: Summit Spoiler
I have seen it few days ago and I liked it. I knew it would not be the same like the first one and when I watched…
I had really high expectations. That's why I'm so disappointed. The Trump-like president was an annoying parody. It would be funny in a comedy, but not in a movie that purports to take itself seriously. The story was so unbelievable it was ridiculous. I didn't like this movie :(
