I think the lesson here was that sometimes you go on fruitless pursuits and it's not necessarily a waste of time even if you don't get exactly what you wanted out of it. He may have "wasted a lot of time" but the journey was what was important. Also I think another lesson was that his dad is his dad, no DNA needed. An asshole is an asshole, raised a boy then made an asshole out of him, then took the coward's approach of not approaching despite having all the power to do so, simple as. I really believe it was all intentional, and not a novice trainload of mistakes.

Oh I'm in exactly the same boat! Was not expecting all this, I'm genuinely so pleased I decided to give it a rewatch!
