Seoul wasn't saying he was desperate to get married because of money. She said from the start that the grandfather was hovering between life and death and he kept asking for the painting.
ML feels a sense of responsibility to the man who adopted him ofd the street.
FL wants a home and a sense of security and protection.
She also uses the painting, as a power play to get back at him by insisting on the point that it is her dowry. He didn't want to marry her, finally agreed and made a sacrifice for the sake of his grandfather, since he can't pay for it.

WOW... WELL SAID....100% agree with you Seoul to Seoul. The writer is absolutely trying to show two people getting together not being together. They have to battle their own inner self, that voice of fear.
In Japan, people tend to cover up their true feelings, there is a lot of fears about being rejected or inconveniencing/bothering others. I am not thrilled about the girl from the past either, but I get the reasoning for using her too. It would have been better if she was really his girlfriend and not just someone who hoped to be.
I reiterate your point that the story is about growth. The leads need to be forthright about their feelings, so they don't miss the person they love. The side people are the irritants used by the writer to propel them. As the viewer it's always our desire to choose the nature and narrative of a story based on what we enjoy consuming, and what we think we would personally do, the reality is this is the writer's vision. I always try to understand the intention as you say of the writer first, the characters' mindsets (we don't all think the same), and the cultural dynamic, rather than try to put my own expectations on it. I find I am far less disappointed, I can enjoy the message or storytelling a lot more. Not a perfect drama by any means but I find it entertaining and interesting still the same. I appreciate reading your thoughts on the drama so thank you.

Is there somewhere i can watch 4 onward with SUBS? Youku International isn't available in my area.

I agree This is wacky. I would rather have 2 episodes a day for 3-4 days a week.. I wonder if someone is rolling dice have the time.

The episodes are really short compared to most dramas, The episodes are only 25- 27 minutes each without the intro and outro, 50 minutes a day. It ends up being 12.5 hours total viewing time. It may feel longer being how slow the episodes are released. It you watched it marathon style might not feel as draggy to you.

Who is the girl in the flashback? FL's sister? The bio-mom? ML's sister?
Is that the ML or his brother?
Is the guy from KL related to the ML somehow? Are they cousins?
Is the writer aiming to get us to think the girl is the bio mom and the ex of the ml, but really she is attached in a different way?
The images in the end of the credits show the same guy that looks like the ML talking to a woman that looks like the FL. I think that is a past memory. I want to know now!!!!

Are you watching the same drama? He has shown the utmost respect for his wife throughout episode 17. He made a strong point of not engaging with the ex in any way other than required for business. The EX is the only one here who is being forceful. She doesn't know he is married yet.
In 18, the ex grabs his upper wrist. He NEVER grabs her hand. It's a total of 4 seconds... He looks uncomfortable and surprised . The edits are made so we don't know if he walks away, pushes her away....It is too early to judge his actions until we see them. It is unclear if she has been told the FL is his wife or not by this point.
Previews are misleading... to spark curiosity.... they don't usually turn out as you would expect. I don't see how the ML has crossed any lines so far.

Wow thanks for the breakdown. The subs are horrible. I thought I missed something when I read this post, so went to rewatch it. You are right he is over the ex, he couldn't say no after the shareholders agreed. I really love this lead. He made a few bad choice but deep down he is a good person. He wants to do the right thing, regrets it when he hasn't.

I think the biggest thing is that the ex has had a hold over his heart and its messed with his head and emotion for years. He is finally feeling alive again, settling in to a happy place and this person returns. She will bring some "trust" drama into the relationship between the leads.
It is only a theory, that the child may have seen a photo.
Yes, QSL is his mother, she saves him like a super hero on his birthday which support what his father said about her. I wonder if the little boy wants a mom so much, so I wonder if he is he let go of any other information he was previously told about her, just to have the mom he wants with all of his heart.
One thing....In the preview after the ex visits the school, the boy he tells his grandfather "I did something and I regret it. I betrayed my mom." The question is which mom and I what way.
The ML isn't clear how the little girl is connected to FL, other than not maybe being aware she is not the her biological mother.
A lot is being lost in translation, I just have to wait for the story to pan out or viki's subs give more answers.

The grandfather said in the dating park when he was looking for wife, that his grandson hadn't been married before. I think SoultoSeoul is right (see in the comments below what she said), the ex-girlfriend left to pursue her dreams overseas. The little boy asked for his mom a lot. The ML showed her photos and said it the mom and she will come when he is 5.
Also They could have broken up with hopes she would return, she might have also left with no word leaving the ML feeling abandoned.
