War of faith is actually watch-worthy if you like Zhang Tian Yang as his role allows him to show how well he can portray a deep character with inner conflicts and huge development throughout the story. Also another masterpiece of his acting is the very small but unforgetable role Bi Xie in growling tiger roaring dragon.
He has played many Idol dramas where he hardly gets the chance to show his true talent. Recently he got a few more seriuos roles and also ML so I guess his career is taken off a little bit now and I‘m really happy for that as I think that he is an amazing actor who is really underrated because like you said he doesn‘t have ML vibes.
I wish I could see him in a more serious drama for example a lighthouse production. Fingers crossed for him.
Big shoutout to Chi Peng Jie who plays Dajiaos mother (and is not even listed here among the actors)! Her acting is so fabulouse, she doesn‘t even seem to be an actress but instead a real pesant of the village. Such a realistic and authentic portrayal is very rare unfortunatelly. And her performance is so heartwarming. I just love everything about it.
