Everyone is entitled to their opinion but watching her review, I don’t understand how the age is such a big…
it's not actually suddenly, ruby lin got criticised ages ago, so did zhou xun in 2018 (and she filmed it in 2016?), zhao liying in legend of fei, zhang luyi in qin dynasty epic recently. I haven't actually seen aging make up for actresses for ages now that i think about it, but I'm 80% sure they get criticise too if they aren't aged properly. cnetizens are way more harsh on cdramas and they can criticise a drama from all angles, because they watch lot more dramas, and get bombarded by them more (overmarketing, clips, buzz around you, family/roommates watching it when you don't want to)

Oh yeah LOL she was harsh as hell. I didn't agree ZZY only matches playing the strong wuxia girls. She played…
I'm talking about production values, scriptwriter is a real toss up, they sometimes pop up in big budget projects, sometimes they are in small budget ones, the scriptwriters credited are sometimes unhelpful too since there's uncredited scriptwriters. i haven't seen xiao chuo so I can't say but it's not just cinematography or costumes or special effects, directing is part of it too, wasn't xiao chuo's story criticsed too? okay you know what, i think most cdramas get their story criticised, cdramaland really really really needs good scriptwriters that aren't pulled and interfered by multiple parties (investors, directors, actors). when i said younger actresses, i was thinking the 95 kids (age range for Awu), the 85 actresses do have a shot at these projects, but a lot of them can't or don't care to give performance that match the level of investment, or the story have lot of issues.

that's the thing, zzy picked the novel despite it being 15 years old, despite her not being any age range of the character. i definitely think if this aired in 2019, it would be better, but it's still wee bit late to the market, that's not really a thing she might have been able to predict though, since it's hard to say how long pre-production took before filming started. the drama adaptation made it MORE tropey and added in more bits that doesn't make sense which is really annoying, oh well adaptations do this a lot. it wouldn't compete against minglan because it literally just finished filming when minglan aired. I don't really like minglan (story-wise and too many women infighting tbh), but i did watch it because it was first in its subgenre, so i guess in some way they combined the tropes in an interesting way?

i guess she just really didn't like the stuff you (and i for the most part) thought was okay? lol. clearly fresher ideas are more important to her i guess?

I'm not familiar with ZZY's acting. Throughout the drama so far I've noticed that she is always breathless and…
It's just her voice + the way she talks. It works in certain situations at times, but sometimes it's a little confusing. I haven't encountered scenes where it was super out of place yet, but I'm also way behind.

I really think it's an expectation thing, lots of people expect the drama to be more than it is (less tropey, smarter schemes) because a) zzy b) level of investment + production team. there's a bit of hierarchy system where movie stars > tv stars. zhang yimou specifically told zzy to not film tv series when she was young, i guess because tv production is much faster pace, so you have less time studying your character and actors are more likely to end up with routine acting. zzy as a mentor also told other actors to pick better scripts in acting variety shows, so when her own drama's story is only so so (or bad if you hate tropey dramas) by lot of people's standards, you get backlash. i don't really think zzy raised the bar for younger actresses, because.....they would have never gotten this level's project anyways.

yessssssssssssss exactly like do you expect the god of war to be skinny white and boyish i mean if you went on…
eh, that one is a comedy. ML is also a prince too, princes don't usually lead armies in more serious dramas. FL didn't grow up to be a General's wife, she grew up as a spoilt princess, using that to criticise that drama is a little odd.

She's specifically General Hu's sister, Hu is one of Xiao Qi's subordinates. So they picked her on purpose, it's…
they gave Wanru, the maid, Awu's sister in law more scenes too and it's all messy drama, so i'm not super hopeful. I liked Hu Yao though, so I hope it's not another terrible female supporting character, since we have too many.

I felt like her rant on Legend of Fei was even much more lenient. This drama, they proved they used their budget…
ahh no, awu's kidnapping was in the book, and Helan's troubling personality and actions make sense due to his background. i'm referring to the crown prince incident, that's not really necessary and it contrast against their later lovey-dovey relationship. i know it's probably to give Wanru a reason to be antagonistic, but it's just iffy? Especially since awu was a victim as well. There's the messy relationships and accidental sleeping together that I find ehhh as well.

While 'A Girl Like Me' got subbed so fast, this drama seems to have not much attention from the subbers. Guess…
isn't it a tencent drama, maybe they finally got in house paid subbers LOL, it's in tencent's interest to do so since they can get more customers that way. this one airs on youku, and youku just license them to other platforms overseas. youku is known for being hilariously shitty at marketing domestically so half their dramas fade into oblivion, the ones that don't are the ones that naturally have buzz. (also fluff dramas are easier to sub, but this one's language isn't that difficult honestly) wait, aren't the subs episodes the same speed as the free episodes? I think that's the speed tencent and iqiyi sub their dramas too?

I watched her year end review which had romance of tiger and rose, love in between, ancient detective, i've fallen for you 少主且慢行, my roommate is a detective, fearless whisper, crossfire, hikaru no go, long night and bad kids. (winter begonia almost made it into top 5) I think only i've fallen for you and my roommate was something that caught me by surprise? love in between and ancient detective are underrated considering their quality, but they show up in recs consistently if you look for 2020 historical drama recs. idk much about i've fallen for you but i guess it's a cute fluffy drama considering its pretty good rating. (6.9, small budget fluff webdrama)

I don't really watch people rant about dramas I like/sort of interested in watching, since sometimes they make me not want to watch OR they make me dislike the reviewer LOL. i watched some for this though! because i got flooded with all the negative buzz the day it aired, it can't get worse! lol

It doesn’t bother me at all. I love the drama reminds me of the rise of the Phoenix and Chen kun and Ning Ning…
They didn't get criticisms for age lol. It helps it aired earlier, before people got tired of big budget dramas and not in the middle of multiple too old actors playing too young characters dramas, but also because Zhiwei was 18. I think people have lot less issues with 30 playing 20, 40 playing 25, Chen Kun is the bigger age gap there but he doesn't actually look his age anyways. Probably helps that age was downplayed in the drama too.

tRoP is the closest drama for comparison in terms of style tbh, but this drama has more romance, and better pacing, weaker politics schemes though.

I felt like her rant on Legend of Fei was even much more lenient. This drama, they proved they used their budget…
I don't think i saw her rant on LoF, only watched her rant breaking down the cameraworks in one particular scene but she does seem more lenient on it, maybe because we don't have enough wuxia? So the story is vaguely interesting even if adapted shoddily.

The novel itself is from 15? years ago though, and you can definitely predict the plot and a lot of the tropes. i don't mind but she does lol, I avoid most tropey dramas usually, and am largely watching this because I want to see how they adapt the novel. If anything, I want to complain that they made it MORE tropey in the drama, and they are the dumb tropes too (falling off a tree and getting caught TWICE) and it changes a pretty impactful first meeting (ep 11). It added in really unnecessary sexual assault, and there's more....messy relationship dramas than I expected? The tragedy of sacrificing everything in the name of power seems somewhat downplayed, but we are still early in the drama, so it'll probably come later.

She's ambivalent towards the cinematography because we've been burnt by gorgeous ones with plot that have all kinds of issues (also burnt by movie actors doing dramas lol, but zzy holds up). She didn't like the meal so she's not going to care about the dressing, basically. I feel like cnetizens in general have higher expectation for zzy, and for this drama because of the production team (it's a movie award winning production team), so when the story doesn't quite meet their expectations, it plummets. zzy's high profile mentoring in acting variety show absolutely did not help either.

I don't watch her reviews/impressions much since i get influx of opinions + douban score for cdrama pickings, but she's always fairly harsh on dramas that isn't particularly fresh, or have some pretty noticeable flaw. She tends to more leniant towards her bias, as do all of us, but when I don't share it, I sometimes come away confused.

I dont get why they had the need to make her "15" It makes no sense when the male lead is very mature looking…
because historically that's what happens, 15 is girl's coming of age and then they are married off, so a lot of novels will specify the age. If you set it to 18 or 20, the audience will be all ???? why didn't she get married? They could have glossed over the age though. As for the male lead, he's a lot of older, because he had to climb his way up, it'd be unrealistic to have a general (one with no background no less) at 18.

XD because the novel is from 15 years ago, and the drama is from 3 years ago when it was trendy in the drama world.
2018 feb till dec from my cursory search. normal time for historical dramas to air is about a year due to post production + getting pass NRTA + waiting for tv channels to arrange them. as for why they take that long, my personal guess is because the dramas you listed were trying to air on tv, since they are big budget dramas, tv channels used to pay big bucks for them.

they all failed because it's too risky, tv channels don't get as many watchers now, it's far cheaper to buy modern drama and if it bombs, that's fine. sometimes they are required to air celebratory dramas too, 2020 had a bunch of poverty related ones. Let me see, 9 historical premiered last year on tv i think? (half of them produced by tv channels they aired in) 7 in 2019, so it's just been rough for historical dramas. it's trending towards just airing online, recoup the cost with vvip system, but i don't think that quite recoup cost of this drama tbh.

idk what's with fate by the way, i think the tv channels just pulled it out from their closet, it likely didn't air before cos other dramas seemed more appealing/were required at the time?
