Female centric drama with male first billing
You may argue as much as you want, but Rong family was the center of this story. The story may say this is about Lu Jianglai but he felt more like an supporting character. Im sorry to the HMH fans but it really was portrayed that way. Don't get me wrong his character is great but the spotlight was stolen by the family drama or rather the women, either works. I kept on coming back not for the romance but for the family drama, if you're here for the romance, you're in for a hell of a ride.Other than that, I really liked the story, the plot line, the character basically everything about it. I do have to say the last 6 episodes felt a bit off to me, I feel as though they should've introduced his family a lot earlier. The ending though really showed the difference between a male head and a female head of the household. They have their mistakes in the way they run their household and it really showed the consequences. The ending in the dukes place really showed that women stay on top, reminded me of like an empress finally making it to empress dowager, the top of the top.
My favourite grey character would be the 5th sister, hate her as much as you want, but that girl persevered through it all. The plot twists involving her was as much as a human can be, her emotions were understandable. She is a worthy opponent to RSB, and I'm glad that she was taught to be better by RSB. I really was surprised by her ruthlessness though, I didn't think she had it in her to deal with her lover that way. I'm glad she reformed.
I won't lie the romance in the beginning was funny, the reversed tropes are so rarely seen that it was enjoyable. All the characters in the start had me guessing about their motives and their characters, what kind of personality they had, what was the relationships between them. This drama is not simple at all, the way I was left guessing at every whim is so rare. You usually can guess what the process is but this was anything but that. Some characters had personalities I thought was going to play more into the script but it just gave them more depth.
In terms of power, I have to say it is nice to see when a woman is in power. RSB is that woman. She had respect and she earned it, she fought off everything including her family for her family. The way she solved things on her own without really involving LJL shows how capable she is and when he did help, it felt like she allowed him to help her. Usually when they show smart people, they're always dumb when it's time to shine but get saved by their partner. To be fair he did save her, but even without him, I feel as though she would get through it, he just made the road smoother. In the end I was lowkey skipping through the romance, my interest in this drama lied elsewhere. I was heavily satisfied with how it ended, I really thought for a moment they would grow old without each other, and maybe have a child in the middle of their lives. Her resolve to walk away from him showed how much she is worthy to be rong family head and him walking away from the duke family showed his resolve to be with her. She was raised in her position, he was not.
Anyways 10/10 drama for me.

Loved everything about it
This year has been a drama slump for me, couldn't seem to really get into dramas this year and only a few of them have really left an impression on me, this drama being one of them. To me it was a refreshing change of plot without the usual tropes being involved. In most dramas, I tend to find the secondary plot a bit of a drag, terribly sorry to most dramas, but I do not care what the villain is up to, like leave me guessing or just don't show the evil dude, like I really could not care at all what he is up to. And I hate to admit that I am like this with secondary leads as well. I am here for the main plot and no supporting characters that take up most of the screen time. I know the evil dude and the plots have big roles but could I care ? Not one bit. There is stupidity in either main plot, evil dude story or secondary plot. I can't handle stupidity x3. Glad to say this isn't one of these dramas and that really helped me out of said slump.I love the visuals and the writing of this. I love how both leads are powerful in their own right. It really is rare to see leads be powerful in an equal setting, most of the time it is the ml being more powerful and resourceful than the fl, which is nice but gets a bit boring for me. I love it when a fl is powerful and can equally match the ml in terms of power and it is justified too. She was a crown prince and a general. Like yes she is that girl.
I also love the shameless of the ml, I do not like leng bing bing mls, and I am happy to say that ji bozai did not disappoint. The female lead also had her own moments and really matched the vibe of the couple well. I just feel like leads pairing really was so good and evenly matched. One thing that does bother is how some people were saying like the fl should've told the ml sooner about being poisoned and for that I have to say like I loved that she held out on her secret for as long as she did, to me it was nice to see that she try to solve her inner conflict about either dying or betraying him, for as long as she did. To me it showed that she didn't take the matter lightly.
Also, the fact that she held onto her secret of being ming xian for as long as she did, consider me impressed. Usually, the ml would like figure it out instantly or just within a short period of time, but girly held tight to that secret like her life depended on it, cause it did, like if she revealed it, she would be betraying him as her previously mentioned secret would be exposed. I love it when a plot, like actually plots and puts importance on the small things. I also love the angst that came with it.
Basically there is not much that I do not love about this drama. Only the airing schedule that was a pain and a half, what do you men one episode a day for some days? That is over as it is completed.

Friendship in the martial world, truly worth watching
Blew my expectations honestly. I do wish there was more scenes with wuxin cause he really is such a delightful character. The female characters are as strong as the males and they don't lack character depth. Most of the characters have stories worth watching it. Side stories that didn't feel distracting from the main characters but just added to it. The mix of stories between the young the old, the villains, the heros was a good mix, not too much and not too little. The friendship in this is really beautiful, many scenes brought tears my eyes when they fought for each other. This is what I expected to see in the martial world. Friendship of youngsters with fights, where hard to win but not impossible with each other. The music in those scenes especially 37 and 38 made me feel immersed in the scenes of battle and friendship, ahh so touching!
I liked the integration of politics and martial world, it was done in a way where it was the best of both worlds. There is loyalty and heros that are worth remembering and villains worth saving (except 7th prince lol). The ending scene with the emperor and xiao se was nice to see since it was mentioned a lot that he was the fave and got to do what they used to do when he was young.

Worth the tears
I cried every few episodes. The cinematography really gave me old Hong Kong vibes. I don't really watch modern dramas, but I'm glad I didn't miss out on this one.Everybody was likeable in this story, if you don't include the villains that is. I really liked the security guard, he was an unexpected addition that made me touched at how invested he was especially in the end.
Speaking of the end, I didn't like it. The end was even though expected when halfway through the story cause they revealed it, made me sad. This whole drama made me sad tbh. YHT her family situation was painful to watch, the scenes when her dad was hitting her made me question if he really did hit her so hard. It looked so real, YHT 你受苦了. The way her dad acted is despicable and really showed that family is who you choose. She had a loving mom and grandma, too bad they left too early.
I really wish to know about the current YHT and TYX, but I guess we can say for sure that they're happy together. Look at their dedication to each other over the years. Every year she would celebrate his birthday. Also I am curious who the dad was, was it really shen xiaojun or just some random ? I am happy to see that the children are living better in the altered timeline, I wonder what happened. So many questions left to answer but they all basically imply a happy ending even though there is so much sadness in this drama.
The brotherhood and friendship of those three punks was ugh heart wrenching, esp cha ge. I'm glad he is out at sea probably wishing tan xin was there. The stories of love this told was all there, maybe not family love in the obvious ways but at least of found family.
Anyways, this drama will leave you crying your heart out if you're empathetic enough. The struggles that will be shown is not so far from common stories told by others, this is just one of them that is being shown. Although, there is some fantasy to it so it's not that common, but definitely worth the tears.

Unique storyline
This drama for what it was at its time was unparalleled. Even to this date there is not much dark dramas like this. For me this has been such a unique storyline that did not receive enough love. It may have been years since I last watched this, but it really did leave a lasting impression on me. It was something that was built on actual bloodshed, that did not seem superficial. There was something that was so drawing to me about it. A lot of people may not find this drama their cup of tea, but it was different that when I think about these days dramas, where they all seem to blur into one. This was really unique and I couldn't find anything close to it. The end to me, was something that really left its mark on me. I really wish there was something with a dark storyline like this, but so far none have really showed up, the closest was probably my journey to you and even that drama, I would not really consider dark except for maybe its aesthetics. Was this review helpful to you?
