I don't get why she's so popular I think she's just a terrible actress!
Well, I wouldn’t put it so bluntly. Not terrible, but really average. She’s very one note, can’t transform herself. I guess she’s popular because she acted in teen dramas and amassed a solid fanbase. That plus her down to earth type of vide make her more approachable.
There is one major problem with this drama, which I am surprised to see that no one has mentioned about it here yet. The script writer, Song Jae Jung, is a woman herself, however the way she wrote every single one of the female characters bothers me quite a bit. There is not even one female character (with a significant role and screen time) that is a game developer, engineer, marketing manager or is otherwise in a position where academic expertise and experience would matter. Let me dissect this more specifically: 1) We have seen Jinwoo’s ex-wife no.1, who dumped Jinwoo for an unspecified reason (probably because he was a self-centered ass who didn’t take care of his wife) just to get together with Jinwoo’s (ex-)best friend and become pregnant to him. Then we see her crying throughout and willingly subjecting herself to the hate and insults of her father-in-law, who considers her a slut (this can be seen in the episode where he convinces her to give up on autopsy). All for the sake of establishing deep animosity between Jinwoo and Cha Hyun Suk, as if Professor Cha favoring Jinwoo wasn’t enough of a reason. 2) We see Jinwoo’s ex-wife no. 2, whose existence serves no valid purpose other than establishing the fact that Jinwoo’s character is a sexually experienced rich business man, who can have any attractive woman he wants. She acts like a bitchy diva, a stereotypical ’difficult to work with’ actress who sleeps around with her manager and uses Jinwoo only for publicity. She is a leech, attention whore gold digger as one would say. There’s no positive attribute to her, which only confirms that this one dimensional character was created only to establish certain characteristics of Jinwoo. 3) Finally I get to dissect Hee Joo. Hee Joo is characterized as emotional and artistic and she has a strong sense of empathy. She’s willing to see good in people, she’s nurturing and feels strongly for others. There’s nothing inherently wrong about these traits. In fact I admire people with aforementioned traits. The problem is, however, that we see her crying in e v e r y s i n g l e episode. For the most ridiculous reasons. The only time her crying was actually justified was when she finally confronted Jinwoo about her brother Se Joo and learned that Se Joo has been missing for one year. The moment she cried on the counter when Jinwoo yelled at her, was very out of place. The time she cried when Jinwoo left Granada as planned, and she ran after him when the train was leaving, was absolutely baffling. Why should she cry for a stranger who had been behaving like a total lunatic the time he spent in Granada, who was rude to her and whom she knew only for a week? Also, she seemed to be alarmingly unconcerned about her underage little brother who hadn’t arrived to Granada the day he promised and hadn’t been answering his phone. If I were his sister, I would have contacted the police eons ago. Instead, she was busy worrying about a lunatic. We learn later on episode 8 that the reason why the script writer made her cry so much was to develop Jinwoo, who had become jaded because of lying and cheating women. Disgusting. I’m also baffled at the fact that Park Shin Hye chose this drama and this character. She is doing an okay job with this character, considering the material she has to work with. But she is supposed to be a top actress on her own right, and we are half way through this drama and all she has been in this drama is a love interest, without whom the drama would be better actually since Jinwoo and Hee Joo have no chemistry and are incompatible too. Also, Hee Joo is implied to be sexually inexperienced (no dating experience, really? The bitch is 28 already, has lived in Spain), gullible and breaks down because of smallest thing even though she’s supposed to have taken care of her family alone for years, you’d think she would have hardened up. Also, tired of seeing female characters that seem to have no libido whatsoever whereas male characters are allowed to have plenty of it as I mentioned before when describing Jinwoo. 4) We see professor Cha shutting up his wife rudely in the church when she asks a question. Professor Cha is a ruthless character, we get it but this drama is full of female characters that are portrayed weak, naive or bitchy and treacherous. we see the classic Madonna and whore setting where Hee Joo represents Madonna and the other women are whores in one way or another. Not even one single female character with integrity or professionalism. All of them revolve around ONE dick. It is almost 2019, Song Jae Jung (and any other writer) has no excuse for writing this kind of bullshit. When people said that the theme of this drama reminded them of Love O2O, they couldn’t have been more wrong. At least Zheng Shuang was an intelligent student and a proficient gamer herself and her character wasn’t just a prop in that drama. What a pity.
