In my opinion, I know Mandarin speakers have a harder time speaking Cantonese than vice versa. I have friends who went to Chinese school and when they are speaking to me in Cantonese their accent is very thick. They have a hard time pronouncing certain words. Hopefully you understand. Nothing wrong with his Cantonese. Mainland and Hong Kong Cantonese sound different. When he speaks you can hear his putonghua’s accent. (By the way I speak Cantonese and can understand basic mandarin)
