I feel like this is one of the few dramas where the second guy (Un) outshines the main guy (Baek Dong Soo) I'm…
I actually agree. But it was really written that way, can't fault JCW because apart from fighting, he was given nothing else really emotionally challenging after say episode 15. Supposedly he was madly in love with Ji Seun, but basically ignored her after he got her. I think she maybe had ten lines after episode 15. She must have seriously pissed off a director or producer. Probably refused to sleep with them. I mean that silly girl who ended up with Cho Rip was given more dialogue!
Upon finishing this, there's 2 things I'm not satisfied with WBDS:- 1) In the early ep,it shown that, kid Jin Ju…
Am in the middle of this drama! Thanks for letting me know that Dong Soo ends up with Ji Seon! I frankly adored Ji Seon and couldn't stand that tacky Jin Ju. I'll keep watching!
This drama deserves to be rated MUCH higher. I understand that we have a lot of tweens loving on such sop as Heirs and Pinocchio, but those dramas cannot begin to enlighten and touch and sincerely ROCK the way TPM does. But then again, no drama can. It's in a league by itself.
Great drama. Gong Hyo Jin is one of the finest actresses working today. She is so offbeat and different I think it's easy to overlook her talent. But that IS her talent. Jo In Sung is amazing; The medical/psychological part was definitely written by lay people. People who sever their limbs do not get them attached and walk out of the hospital the next day, but apart from that, it was very good.
Yep, because of Mi Young running away with Daniel, I so enjoyed this one so much better. So wish they had shown…
I somehow always tend to agree with your assessments. I actually found that Joe Chen tended to pout too much. In this instance I found Jang Na-Ra came far closer to the intent of the writers. She is a much more talented actress and used her acting prowess to convey just how giving and magical the main character was. Also, in the Taiwanese we are told time and again that Xin Yi is stupid. In the Korean version, Mi-Young is anything but stupid. She is talented and intelligent, but her gift is her empathy and self denial. This is why I much prefer the Korean version, although both are fun.
I am someone who actually watched the Korean Version first, and loved it so much I watched the Taiwanese version. I liked it too, but it was even more flawed than the Kdrama version. The acting in almost every instance, was abysmal in the original.
Lin Mei Xiu as Xin Yi's mom was the only exception. I've seen her in other T-Dramas and she is a great actress. Despite the bad acting, I came to care about each character and love them. Ruan Ethan as the lovable but hotheaded Ji Cun Xi was adorable and incredibly sexy. Chen Baron as Dylan was sexy too but perhaps the worst actor in the bunch, if such a thing is possible.
All in all I loved it but sometimes the fantasy was a bit hard to take. Especially the sequence when Ji Cun Xi decides to marry Xin Yi despite the fact she is (supposedly) barren. Her family are each dressed in Chicken outfits and Xin Yi chases them through town and sees buildings all around with the words "i love you" on them. Xin Yi chases the last one down and it's her mother. Her mother's hair is down and messy when Xin Yi pulls off her Chicken costume head. Then she sees one more person dressed in Chicken costume while standing next to her mom and chases him into a church, and it's Ji Cun Xi's assistant. Then she sees everyone she has been chasing lined up inside the church for a wedding; It's all the people who she has been chasing. Including her mother who was lying down with messy hair a few hundred yards from the Church. Now they are all dressed in formal attire with their hair done lined up for the wedding. I'm just wondering how would her mother be able to get past her and have her hair up and makeup done and formally dressed?
There were a lot of nonsensical sequences like this such as Ji Cun Xi allowing his assistant to take him to a whorehouse. And we are supposed to take his preference for sticky note girls as a sign of his love. Things like this force me to rate this version much lower than the Korean version, where the acting is superb (Korean actors are noted for this) and we are not asked to COMPLETELY suspend disbelief.
Watched this and loved it! It was a bit formulaic, as are many K-Dramas. But what does that matter when executed so brilliantly? And as a devoted fan of Jang Hyuk, it is yet another notch in his belt. This is one example of a remake that is better than the original in almost every way. Jang Na Ra was absolutely charming as only she can be. A keeper for me.
I'm a HUGE fan of the Korean version, so I watched the Thai version and loved it! It's tough to compare apples and oranges, even if based on the Hong Sister's original idea.
The writing in the Korean version is better. Hong Sisters thing again. But some of the writing in latter episodes of the Thai version is amazingly good and is so faithful to the famed Korean sisters writing some of the new dialogue could have been penned by them.
Acting, again, the acting in the Korean version was better. A lot of the cast in the Thai version did not seem to be professional actors at all; and therein lies it's charm.
Although weaker in the comedic elements than the Koraen version, the cast, especially the two leads, had a very naturalistic acting style and a kind of physical beauty that lent itself well to a story that in the end is all about true love despite itself.
Sucharat Manaying was the very essence of innocent beauty and sweetness, and even though her lack of professional acting chops was apparent, especially in the beginning, it wasn't enough to deter from her embodiment of Aom-am. As a couple, she and D'Angelo Mike were mesmerizing. I will never forget the Ice Cream Kiss. The series really hit it's stride there, and I will be waiting to see those two again.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of some of the other cast. Special mention must be made of Janesude Jane as Mintra, the third leg of the Mike/Aom/Mintra triangle. She was even more nauseating than her K-Drama counterpart, and combine that with her ladyboy persona and her constant whining "P-Guy!", I seriously hated the character. The Grandmother on the other hand, was obviously not a pro, but so charming and adorable. I loved that her role was expanded and she was delightful throughout. Likewise, Mike's parents were again, not great actors, but they were wonderful nevertheless, as they were far more personable than their more talented K-Drama counterparts.
I did love the music in the Thai version but not as much as the music in the original. Sorry but Byul vs Mike's screeching, Byul wins every day, all day.
Loved the skinship, loved the love. The writing cleverly focused on their relationship and Mike was a gentler, sweeter guy than Rain's character in the K Version.
Back to the Ice Cream love scene. Those who have seen it know what I'm talking about. It was both hot and lyrically beautiful in the best tradition of K-Drama, and I will never again be able to eat an ice cream cone without blushing.
Although artistically not quite in the same league as the original, it is wildly entertaining and at times, deeply moving. I think the two leads have huge careers ahead of them, and I'll be on the look-out for more great Thai Dramas!
I love Full House, and just finished watching Full House Thai based on the enthusiastic posts here. I JUST LOVED IT. It's got its flaws, but there is a lot more love in the Thai version and OMG the Ice cream kisses I will NEVER forget. I just found it more fulfilling because in the original version, YeongJae's family are never really shown welcoming Ji Eun back into the family... they sort of disappear. But the Thai version really makes you feel that the family loves her.
One of my fave dramas ever. Silly and fun without being simple minded. There are complexities of characterization and plot points that have to be watched closely or missed. This drama made me a fan of both the lead actors. Perhaps this style of drama isn't in vogue in Korea these days, but I find it far less depressing and more realistic to watch two people fall in love despite themselves than the drek being made lately. Frankly, I think it's better than 99 percent of the absolutely boring Kdramas that have passed for entertainment in the past two or three years. After watching complete zero dramas like You from Another Star, and Nodame Tomorrow I am hoping there exists a Sageuk or fun drama that will rescue me from this malaise.
I'm so grateful for this website. I have become acquainted with many dramas and subsequently watched and enjoyed them. And now I have found this drama, 后宫甄嬛传, and it is quite simply, spectacular. At first, I was slightly disappointed because the sound quality is not the best, and it seems to be dubbed. But it was still interesting. I was already hooked by the second episode and each and every episode gets better and better. The sets and costumes are astounding. It is quite simply like going back in time as the attention to detail surpasses any drama I have ever watched. The multitude of characters each have their own story and even though it is hard for me, a westerner to truly understand the dynamics, I still understand enough and sit alternately in tears and or slack jawed at the lyrical beauty of this drama. I am currently watching episode 56 and wish that this series lasted for 1000 episodes, it's that good. Any lurkers here who enjoy historical drama, I would advise you to watch this amazing, beautiful, compelling drama. It is quite simply a work of art.
