The drama has, so far, left a number of things out that are in the novel. Some are likely to be about navigating censorship, some we may get back to in later episodes. For the senses, we may get a better idea once she experiences one.

Nuanced: implies a high level of complexity, depth, and careful consideration rather than a simple, black-and-white view.
Oh, and the person I think is a hit is Deng Kai the actor. Qi Min is a darkly disturbed character. I find it fascinating to get an insight into how the actor understood the character and went about constructing him. If you don't, thats okay.

Your black-and-white viewing of drama must make them very tedious to watch. I guess the nuances are just lost on some people.
Sidenote: Swearing and throwing insults around are never the sign of a winning argument.

I think it would have been easy for Deng Kai, and the director, to portray Qi Min as a 2d villain - just bad, because that's what the story says he is. Clearly, they instead went for a deeper approach and I think Deng Kai went the extra mile in understanding Qi Min's background and motivations and produced a very believable character.
I love that these posts give us an insight into that, and round out some of the backstory that the drama didn't get into.

If you can't appreciate the work put in by Deng Kai to create a believable deeply flawed character, then I don't know what to tell you.

Deng Kai made another post in his Weibo about ep 39. I've added it to the Qi Min character missives in the discussion section. This one was a bit heartbreaking! 😭

I always enjoy a rewatch, if I can - especially for the opening few episodes. First time I'm spending a lot of my time reasing the subtitles. But for the rewatch, I notice more of the visuals. 😊

It might be worth reading the first few chapters of the novel. From what I recall, it starts at the same point, but explains a bit of the backstory and circumstances.

Short format dramas are a whole different beast. I've found that its best to go in without any expectations and see how they go!
So far, I'm enjoying it (I'm 6 eps in). The story is interesting and the acting is great. 😊
I'd recommend watching episode 6 before you decide!!
