Break up can work in a story, but if that will make the story better or worse depends on the writing, because in my experience, most times, it is just a device to postpone the main leads happy ending. Someone who does things right can even increase romance during break up, showing how much they miss each other and becoming stronger emotionally so after they get back together, nothing can separate them, but again, way too many dramas where the main leads are supposed to have a fairytale kind of love break up for the slightest misunderstanding or just for noble idiocy, which is why I generally prefer whenever the show does not have a break up at all.

Hey, DrBuni! If I remember correctly, this one prioritizes the plot and the action, but the romance is very much present throughout the whole story. On the contrary, I believe this drama is great, which is exactly why it makes no sense for characters like Chu Zhao to have so much artificial relevance in the story, because the story was perfect without him. It was very funny for me when I realized that Chu Zhao character was beyond useless. He was first the minion of the Chancellor, but the Chancellor himself would send someone else to do the work anyway, then, he was supposed to put pressure on Xiao Jue but he was powerless to do anything about it, then, he gets two promotions and the ear of the emperor simply for tagging along, and does nothing with his new authority beyond stalk the female lead that doesn't even register him beyond another of her buddies... waste of screentime

I hate love triangles because most of them seem to be designed just to cause discomfort and introduce an obstacle for the main couple. I do believe that a good writer can introduce any possible trope as long as it fits within the story and serves a purpose to move things forward, but unfortunately, this trope is mainly used to create tension, and yes, to reintroduce the trope several times throughout stories. The love triangles get so much attention that certain shows will even promote the show with social media presence and promotions involving the actors that played the female lead and the second male lead, and others are more daring and do photos and videos of the three (ML, FL and SML).
The love triangle trope in way too many dramas is unnecessary for the plot, character development or the romance, but still, they get a bunch of screentime, dedicated scenes and sometimes things get so ridiculous that there is even some kind of break up/farewell exclusive scene for the second male lead even when he never had any relationship with the female lead.
I genuinely think that most of these love triangles that serve no real purpose are designed for two targets. The first target is people who likes love triangles, maybe because they fantasize with two very hot guys obsessively pursuing one girl, and the second target is people like me to make us uncomfortable on purpose to increase engagement with the show and social media about the show by keeping us talking about how annoying this is for the people that only want what romance is for, for the main couple, for the protagonists.

Good Point! I just started watching this, so I don't know who to side in this thread yet, but regardless, it is good to recognize that every scene has a purpose in a show, and specially in Dramaland. It is not an exaggeration to say that a smile and spending time with a guy carries emotions, since we all should know by now how relevant small gestures are in K-Dramas and C-Dramas. The fact alone of the camera focusing on something specific means something, and a girl's smile towards something that the production has made sure that the viewer know that has a romantic interest on the girl is not a coincidence, and is meant to show that she is at least comfortable with the guy's approach. I do hope that this is something small, or I'll end up skipping or dropping if it is too bad.

I like to do some research about the dramas that I want to watch, and part of that is reading comments, but we cannot trust anyone anymore just claiming that the show has no love triangles only to have love triangles all over the show.
