For me, at first it was just WJY and WXY's acting and their chemistry when they met in the nunnery. Then it was the push and pull of their dialogue. After that, it was the grayness of the hub SYR--I couldn't figure him out and I kept watching his scenes. And before I know it, I was just commenting here, live-watching with some great fans of the show and drinking tea at midnight with y'all, LOLOL. I'm still rewatching because, for me, there are still character arcs/directorial choices to go "wow" over.

Oh yes, each of their confrontation was pretty chilling, from her first looking in his general direction during the Coming of Age banquet and giving that bitter smile before walking past him to that greeting at the door where he paused with his foot almost stumbling and his smile was more a grimace, to that conversation you are referencing, and then the rest. I want to trace all of them and chart the progression!
So I got my younger sister to watch now. She never read the books. She immediately told me XL was the male lead and endgame after about half of first season. I didn’t want to break her heart yet.😆

So many delicious moments. But the most important thing to notice--> you will see the hint of SYR's actual "power" over the Evil Princess. Not only did he not obey, he wasn't even afraid later. We know a little seed had already hatched into his spider mind that XFF as Jiang Li could be his new future.
