Just a side note: The top actresses in C-ent have a hard time getting a popular actor to play second billing; so many closer to her age who are top-billers get younger actresses accepting second billing. 99 percent of Chinese historicals have their protags aged 15 or 16 years old. If they were to cast just young actresses, you'd miss out the seasoned acting of our top actresses because you think they're too old. They are ALL too old for the roles. Did you really think Zhao LiYing looked MingLan's age in The Story of MingLan?

You're welcome. Yes, LBY certainly had some big flaws :). But I loved that drama, nonetheless. He and CSS made a great team when he actually listened to her genius at finding hidden stuff.

She forced his hand. His mother already told him--either we kill XFF (as ordered by the Princess) or tomorrow we lose our heads. XYR chose his mother and sister over his wife. NOTE: He was already cheating on his wife because he had already succumbed to the temptation of becoming Fu Ma (Prince Consort). That first step led to the Princess planning to kill XFF. To force his hand, she went to the mother--now, between you and me, I think she told the mother to tell SYR it's either XFF dead or his mother and sister.
Also, there is a lot of subtext in this drama's dialogue. Many things are unspoken in between lines like the ending "My Fu Ma." You'll find many puns and wordplay between XFF/Jiang Li and Duke Su--their flirting verged into intimacy that I've yet to see in other Chinese dramas. For examples, please scroll up and check out the Other Topics board under the topic Couple Scenes, clever dialogues, wordplay (something like that). We have put in many posts there showing the progression of their flirting.
But, back to your question, there is a scene later in the last two episodes where the princess said to Shen Lang, "Even though I ordered you to kill her, you still choose her in the end." (paraphrasing from memory).

Did you not watch the whole of episode 1? When SYR, after he killed XFF, he stood in front of the Princess and she was gleefully asking him how it felt to be dirty and corrupted? And also how asked what did his wife do before he buried her alive? And how he was now tainted? And then later in the scene he grabbed her by the neck and said, "We'll go down together?" And she made him make a choice and he did by KNEELING? and then she laughed and softly mocked him by calling him her Prince Consort, thus intimating that she tempted him to do it because he wanted to be her husband? It was right there in that conversation.
