Yes, when I was little, all we watched in Chinese (Cantonese) movies were very, very tragic stories, LOL. And always, the cutest, most amazing child actress who could speak so well (the Chinese version of Shirley Temple!) who would bring tears to my mom's eyes.
Actually, watching modern dramas now, the themes haven't changed much, but the acting was a little better back then (at least, my nostalgia tells me so, LOL).
Now that I think about it, Story of Pearl Girl does somewhat remind me of the old sagas I watched of the country bumpkin bullied woman making her way into the city, going through many trials, and finally becoming successful, so no wonder I enjoyed Duan Wu's journey :).

Interesting POV explaining how social reality reflects in entertainment media. Thinking back about film in Hollywood during the Depression, they were mostly down and out bums/funny men, gangsters, hardened women, lots of booze and Big dancing musicals. One of my favorite things to study is looking at old films and comparing their themes to that generation’s world view. Many often conclude entertainment as a form of escapism, but to me, it is also a window into the zeitgeist of that time. Thx for reminding me that C-dramas is also an opportunity for me to continue my studies.
I'm sorry about that. Is there no way to sleep somewhere for a while? On your living room sofa? Anywhere on the other side of the house? I hate to see people sleep-deprived because I know how it feels!
I really played myself because I haven't seen Shen Tai ever play a role where his character wasn't a crust and…
Just think of it this way--he's running out of ways to die in drama. One of these days, he'll have to try his hand in ending in one where he lives as a main character :D.
Ok y’all have to see this; one of LYN’s fan sites posted about the alien abduction theory 🤣🤣🤣: https://weibo.com/2065763751/5103541087898042
I highly recommend watching this on a big TV screen. There IS a difference.
