The first cut is the deepest

Childhood told the tale of two high school friends who had the potential to become more. There was little dialogue, the story was told mainly through their interactions with each other and largely from Thanaphan’s viewpoint.

Thanaphan and Kantaphat are best friends and constantly spending time together kicking a soccer ball, swimming, and just lying around. Slowly, touches become more intentional, glances linger, and hugs go beyond the three second mark. Kantaphat is approached by a girl and they exchange info and begin dating much to Thanaphan’s chagrin.

The film didn’t cover any new ground. First love is the deepest and sometimes most painful, yet this story told with almost no words was still satisfying in the exploration of the boys’ feelings and sexual awakenings. First love when complicated by not being mainstream can be even tougher to navigate. Childhood captured the first tingly feelings, heartbreak, and awkwardness so often part of this time in life.
