Celebrity "What is this? Stranger Things?"
Agent from Above was an entertaining if uneven drama between good and evil, heaven and hell, with humans smack dab in the middle of the conflict.
The Heavenly Third Prince (aka Ne Zha) and Hell’s Demon King Vasavatti once battled in the Human Realm causing countless mortal casualties. New rule! Immortals can now only use human proxies to work in the human realm. Han Chieh is one such agent from above who does the bidding of the 3rd Prince. Empowered with special abilities and magical pogs, he beats on or destroys demons and ghosts. Vasavattie has his own emissaries, Chen Chi Sha and another helper lurking in the shadows. Vasavattie seeks to return to the human realm in order to devour and then rule the human and heavenly realms. Only Han Chieh with his mortal and immortal friends stand between Hell’s Demon King and the humans.
What I liked:
~~There was nothing much new to the story, but the episodes were engaging and moved quickly.
~~The acting was satisfactory, some performances were stronger than others.
~~Surprisingly, the CGI/special effects were pretty good for a drama.
~~Supernatural fights utilized humans with their specialized weapons and creepy, ghostly critters as well as ghosts.
~~The creature of the week episodes evolved into the central overall plot.
What made me go hmmmm…
~~The police department seemed to completely accept that other worldly creatures were at work in the city and that Han was an agent from above with special abilities.
~~I know why the writers included Ye Zhi, but her inclusion really didn’t make much sense after her family’s involvement was cleared up.
~~If you like or dislike the female lead, you’ll be okay. She’s in the first few episodes and then disappears until near the end. She wasn’t the only one. The police officer seemed important, then not so much, and then important. The 3rd Prince was the same, he appeared and disappeared intermittently.
What didn’t work as well:
~~Plot points, maybe due to translation issues, became muddled at times. And certain elements were left at loose ends. Along with the appearing and disappearing, non-ghost characters, the story just didn’t feel like it was tightly written, more like different people wrote each episode and then hoped everything tied together well.
~~The pervert ghost. Yeah, no. Not even for comedy relief.*
To sum up:
I actually enjoyed this drama overall and binged the heck out of it. I would also be willing to watch a S2 and I can’t say that about a lot of dramas. The story and editing had some hiccoughs, but it looked good, the acting was good enough, and there was always something shiny or ghostly green to watch next. Basically, Agent from Above met my bottom-line standard---it was entertaining.

Spiritual power can’t beat karma.
And karma can’t defeat a wish.
So, a person with a wish is strongest of all.”

Trigger warnings: Suicide. Child murder. Porn in the background of an episode. A pervert ghost who gropes women. Snakes. Smoking. CGI bird killed.
*Grown-up talk following---a pervy ghost, one who lurks in women’s bathrooms and gropes women is not funny. Contrary to what Han said, the ghost was bad. No woman being subjected to groping should be the comedic moment. Maybe it’s funny to guys, but ask any woman if they think a strange man feeling them up would be considered funny. Big nope. Had to bump my score down just for that pervy character.
