"Friendship is built on trust"
Writer/Director Stephen Lopez created a surrealistic dystopian wild ride called Hito (Catfish). The short film centered around a teenage girl named Jani and her pet catfish named Kiefer. Would that it was that simple.
Jani lives in the shadow of the nuclear reactors. She’s bullied at school and at home. Her mother gives her money to buy something for dinner. In the process of buying a fish, a talking dog in a levitating chair transports her to a hair salon. There she is given a talking catfish as a pet. Her world is only beginning to turn upside-down.
I won’t write more so as not to spoil the film. Suffice it to say that it was energizing to watch a teenage girl and a catfish bloody the nose of an authoritarian regime. Worth a try if you like strange, short films. Or catfish.

Trigger warning: Spewing blood. Dismemberment.
Déjà vu note: Slightly reminiscent of Calamari Wrestler
Slightly spoilery comment: I wish they would have shown the worker’s face at the drive-thru near the end of the film. Friends forever!
