"A hero slays a dragon. The worst thing is if he turns into a dragon."

When I started The Mask of Shura of Fire Cloud aka Fire Cloud Evil God: Mask of Chaos aka The Beast I knew this relatively short web film was not going to be a life changing event. But Yuen Wah and Bruce Leung were the headliners and I’m only human and a kung fu flick fan so I was contractually obligated to watch.

The Black Phoenix, an immortal monster with horrific power, has been sealed in the Shura Mask for centuries. The mask is guarded by the Luocha family whose head is called the Fire Chief Demon who is endowed with special powers. The current chief, Lao Xie Shen, has adopted son Xiao Xie Shen/"Little Demon" and biological son Xi Cheng Xiu return home. Xie Shen is a gifted kung fu artist and enjoys using his skills a little too much which lands him in trouble with his dad. The Ghost Bird is determined to steal the Shura Mask and release the Black Phoenix to conquer the world.

First things first. The two older kung fu stars were not in the film much. Leung had a more expanded role, but Yuen Wah was relegated to a small supporting role. Given that both were around 70 and their bodies had sustained years of pounding for their art’s sake, I was impressed that they moved as well as they did. Yang Bo Xiao was the star of this web flick. He basically played the role of Thor---a cocky, leads with his fists and kicks hothead who had to be taught to lead with his heart and brain. Xie Shen fell in love with Xiao Xue, the lady blacksmith who was equally talented at commanding the elements and quick with a fist or kick. She wielded a hammer similar to Mjölnir. And Li Jun Lin played the part of the jealous and dangerous brother. Yuen Qiu made a welcome appearance as Xiao Bao who had an important role to play in Xie Shen’s education.

Possibly due to the film’s short run time, the filmmakers relied heavily on the audience filling in the blanks. The movie was based on commonly used storylines so it wasn’t hard, but I really hate having to do the writers’ job for them. The cinematography was well done for an inexpensive film. I do think they must have scored a great deal on a rain maker because they loved to use rain for ambiance. The CGI/AI was rudimentary and oftentimes glaringly fake. The fights were mostly kung fu posing, either slowed down or sped up or given a CGI assist.

Fire Cloud Evil God: Mask of Chaos, seriously the title is longer than the movie, was watchable with better acting than a lot of cheap web films. I was happy to see Yuen Wah, Bruce Leung, and Yuen Qiu so my basic entertainment needs were met.

What time is it note: I think this film was supposed to be set during the Republican Era due to the mention of warlords. The costumes were anything but Republican with the women wearing short shorts and revealing tops. Many of the guys’ costumes were close to band camp rejects. Like much of the story, it was up to the viewer to determine if it was in a galaxy far far away, or closer to home.
