I have only given 11 shows a 10/10 rating and 2 of them are not Korean. They are all from this decade. In order from most to least favorite it would be this: 1. Just Between Lovers 2. Queen In Hyun's Man 3. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo 4. It's Okay, That's Love 5. Money Flower 6. Nine: Nine Times Travel 7. Defendant 8. Tomorrow With You 9. Mr. Sunshine
I am not someone who tends to praise shows easily. I definitely enjoy most shows, but I feel incredibly hesitant to call something a masterpiece. However. This show is a largely underrated gem.
Coming from a largely Kdrama background, having seen only a couple other Cdramas such as Love O2O and Put your Head on my Shoulder. I was actually extremely impressed by the writing of this show. Throughout all 35 episodes all the characters seemed to be incredibly complex and have compelling backstories, motivations, and flaws that they were able to heal through their unique bonds with others. At no point did I feel strained because I felt a situation was unreasonable or I couldn't understand the characters. There is only one person who felt like an irrational villain, but they didn't really play that big a part of the story anyway.
I will be honest in saying that I didn't think the ending was perfect, however the journey in this drama has got to be one of the best experiences I have had in Dramaland. Ever. Especially for a Chinese drama. This blew my socks off for expectations when it came to Cdramas, and the ending definitely wasn't bad either. I have rated other shows 10/10 for less. So I strongly recommend this show to anyone who may be on the fence. It is absolutely worth it.
I know people are going to scoff at this a bit, since 8.4 is already a relatively high score on MDL, but for fans of Taiwanese Dramas this show is criminally underrated. I also agree with one of the lower comments that this has got to be the most high quality and engaging show I have ever watched out of Taiwan and was an absolutely solid 9.5 for me. Even when comparing it to Kdrama's of the same rating on my list. If anyone has even the slightest doubts. Just watch it. The show is amazing and I hope that good shows like these can crop up even more in Taiwan.
Same writer as You Who Came from the Stars, it has my attention :D
I didn't actually know this, I have seem some comments trashing the writer for their cliches and past works, but I didn't actually know any of them (nor cared much. I try not to let past biases affect present work)
I am actually happy they made You Who Came from the Stars though, because I really liked that drama. It wasn't the best drama (especially in retrospect) but it definitely wasn't bad and if the writer even makes something on par with that, then I think this drama will turn out great. I already love the first two episodes.
Just finished the second episode. I absolutely love the cast, Hyun Bin and Ye jin are the best. The only question…
Take it as somewhere in-between. Much like in the US there is not one unified opinion about North Korea within South Korea, as people who are "Right Wing" are generally going to be very hard on North Korea, outlining the differences and trying to discourage collaborating with and helping the North Korean Regime too much, however people who are "Left Wing" are going to be more pro-reunification and see North Koreans as more of their brothers who should be assisted and corrected to bring both parties closer to Reunification.
Much like most capitalist/developed countries, the "Left" or "Progressive" party tends to have more media dominance and thus it is going to be in the interest of many people in the Media to not demonize North Korea too badly. If the drama is too serious it may not be very enjoyable for a wide audience either. North Korea is likely not as bad as the US media portrays it, because the US media ONLY talks about the bad aspects. However the leftist drama industry in Korea do have an agenda to soften views on North Korea and encourage reunification and so you will see a more rosy picture.
I really enjoyed the first episode, it was a slow one, but that is completely okay and I am already excited for the build up that will happen in coming episodes~
Unlike all these boomers here who started watching Kdramas in the early 2000's and think this is overdone, I think the idea sounds fresh and interesting and will be interested to see more. I am hyped for the show~
Coming in with very few expectations, I am enjoying this drama a lot for what it is, a Rom-com with tidbits of fantasy and some heart-tugging moments. I will admit I expected it be a little more serious, however most of the shows I am currently watching are pretty serious, so this is kind of a welcome show to chill out with (See what I did there?).
Yeah it isn't looking like a masterpiece so far, but I definitely think it is going well and I hope more people give the show a chance with the correct expectations.
Why the heck are the ratings so bad? This show is amazing. Like, I am normally a pretty harsh critic when shows legitimately aren't good. I wouldn't call this show a masterpiece by any means. But this show is genuinely enjoyable and deserves at least an 8.5 or something. I will be pretty disappointed if they do in fact shorten the show. Because it has had good pacing and I haven't disliked a single episode yet.
So the drama description makes it sound like there may be romance in this show. But romance is not marked as a genre. I normally only watch stuff with romance, but the plot sounds interesting enough that I will actually give this show a shot.
I didn't know Just Between Lovers would be on this poll because I remember it starting in 2017, but it is by far my favorite drama on this list. Yes, Mr Sunshine was a masterpiece in a lot of ways, both Mr Sunshine and Just Between Lovers are rated 10/10 on my list. However, Mr Sunshine would fall closer to the bottom of my list of 10/10's whereas Just Between Lovers strongly contests for my number one favorite drama of all time.
Even if Just Between Lovers doesn't win, I strongly STRONGLY recommend to EVERYONE who has not seen the drama yet to give it a shot. It is such a good drama. Thank you and happy new year everyone!
Going to give an update, because two episodes in I had a very negative opinion of both leads and the state of the drama. I am now at episode 8 and this show is absolutely amazing. The fact they were able to make me hate both characters in the beginning, but then grow to love both of them and root for them is incredibly telling of the skill work of this drama and I am looking forward to every episode. Glad I stuck with it and it reminds me of my old "Watch four episodes before giving up rule" I used to have when I first started Kdrama watching. It holds true here.
genuine question, which time travel dramas have you found intellectually stimulating?? I be curious
I enjoy most time travel dramas, which is part of what made it a little disappointing that I didn't like this one. Some of the other Time Travel dramas I really enjoyed were:
Nine: Nine Times Time Travel Tomorrow With You Familiar Wife Todome no Kiss Signal
I also like time leap dramas, but those are not exactly the same as normal time travel dramas. As the effects of the past/present/future don't play a big role in effecting the original timeline. Or if they do you don't see it. This includes stuff like:
Jin Queen In Hyun's Man Live up to your Name Rooftop Prince Life on Mars
Maybe this will be an unpopular opinion here, but I am really not liking this show that much so far.
I have finished the first two episodes and I don't feel like they are really taking advantage of the Time Loop tag at all, and both of the lead characters seem incredibly one dimensional and the female lead often makes incredibly questionable decisions. It is pretty hard to follow the actual timelines as well (Because of poor script writing, not because it is joyfully complex). I get that this is supposed to be a comedy, but normally time travel dramas are meant to be intellectually stimulating, meanwhile I kind of have to turn my brain off to watch this show.
If you are enjoying the show thus far by all means continue and enjoy it for what it is, but if you are a fan of time travel/time loops in general, know that that aspect of the show is not handled very well at all in my opinion.
The way I rate shows is strongly based off of how I choose to pick up shows as well. I won't start a show unless it has at the very least a 7.5 rating or higher, and so if I am able to finish a show I will always rate it at least 7.5, if I am unable to finish a show I still feel it is wrong not to leave a rating, but I understand that rating a show after only a couple episodes doesn't feel right either. So I start rating shows after I reach the halfway point in a show (8/16 episodes).
Here is my scale: 10 - Masterpiece 9.5 I really enjoyed everything about the show 9 - I enjoyed everything about the show 8.5 - I enjoyed ALMOST everything about the show (One major flaw or a couple minor ones) 8 - I enjoyed most of the show (A couple major flaws/lots of minor flaws) 7.5 - It was good enough for me to finish it. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 7.5 - I may have liked it, but was unable to finish it for whatever reason 7 - It was decent but I definitely was not going to finish it 6.5 > If I got halfway through a drama with a rating this low I forced myself pretty hard.
A really simple but very good movie. I enjoyed it quite a lot and would recommend it to others who read the premise and thought it might seem interesting.
Given the language barrier the relationship between the leads is very much based on their actions and experiences they share together, and the movie is pretty quiet all around: mostly focusing on the setting and events that are taking place at that time.
I was interested in this originally because you rarely see dramas/movies where westerners take such a prominent role on the Asian side of the world. The actor playing Jack Turner is a really solid one and the English side of the acting really isn't bad compared to most cameos by westerners. It was definitely an interesting experience all around.
1. Just Between Lovers
2. Queen In Hyun's Man
3. Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo
4. It's Okay, That's Love
5. Money Flower
6. Nine: Nine Times Travel
7. Defendant
8. Tomorrow With You
9. Mr. Sunshine
