With all the praise everywhere this drama was very disappointing (sometimes even mediocre, bland and boring) despite the outstanding cast; being very generous it scores barely 6,5/10.
You need to watch this movie with the right mindset; this is (most definitely) not for the faint hearted. Be prepared this movie will haunt you for some time after you finish it and you will never forget it for the rest of your life. And you should not forget even if you wanted to. Both (anti-war) movies "City of Life and Death" and "Come and See" (Idi i Smotri, 1985) are so much on another level, they really make other (great) war movies pale in comparison and will force you to ponder that living in a peaceful world surrounded by your family and the people dearest to you is certainly not a given and we should really appreciate it. The way both directors were able to portray the horrors & suffering of people caught up in war while still maintaining the dignity of the people who got to endure these atrocious times is truly astonishing and deserves a standing ovation we can hear untill the end of time. I cannot praise both directors enough for bringing on the screen the true face(s) of ultimate evil for all of us to see, especially the ones among us who don't care about reading history; so warmongering history can keep repeating itself (..) again and again and again... Why did I mention also "Come and See" (1985)? It's because both movies are like two sides of the same coin; the coin of human evil & malicious madness when they thrive under the most "nourishing" and fatal condition of all: (total) war.
Is there a ML more badass&loyal than this one? I highly doubt it. Don't hesitate and just watch it if you like action. That fire hose scene in the car park (..) is one of the best action scenes ever. Cruel City is from the same screenwriter.
Even with a pretty good cast this drama was utterly boring and tedious. You'll need an overdose of suspension of disbelief to keep your eyes from rolling seeing how silly the protagonist and antagonist try to outwit each other...
After watching the kdrama it's based on I was so happy to find out there's also a Japanese version, but this jdrama looks (casting) and feels so bad compared to Mawang...
