Are these really overlooked movies?? I have watched all of them, Attack the Gas Station! (1999) more than once…
If you're a really big Korean film fan you've probably seen at least half of these, I agree. I decided on these movies aiming at people who either watch mostly dramas or are new to Korean movies, because of the newfound Parasite hype :)
If you have a couple suggestions for me and a possible future article, let me know :D
ahhh the good old classic attack the gas station, movie is a roller coaster of hierarchy and its friggin hilarious.…
Definitely more known than the other entries, but underrated in my opinion (the movie is getting older and more obscure) while it's a must watch in my opinion, hence I put it in the honorable mentions category.
The Wailing is a great movie indeed, definitely better than Gonjiam, but also a lot more popular. I disagree that…
I can definitely understand your point of view. I'll definitely admit that I'm not expert on horror, especially found footage, so I understand why the movie might be underwhelming to you. To prove that I didn't include it mindlessly, I made my found footage horror obsessed friend (110+ FF movies under his belt) watch it and he enjoyed it. After he greenlit the movie I decided to add it (as it brings some variety in my list of mostly thrillers/action movies). I agree The Wailing and Grave Encounters are "strictly" better movies (grave encounters only because there's character development imo) any day of the week but GE isn't Asian and Wailing is very mainstream so i wanted to add Gonjiam (as its the best Korean Found Footage, I only know about 3 total existing though so not much competition :D
The reason I skipped KKD for now as well as Hong Sang Soo is because arthouse isn't really my style usually, while BJH and PCW movies are more straight forward while still being amazing, hence they're my personal favorite directors :)
City of Violence => the ONLY S-korean action movie well filmed, on par with the best asian action movies (even…
I agree that Korean action movies tend to overly cut the action bits which makes it really hard to follow the combat (The cop, the gangster, the devil also does this sadly, even though I love that movie).
I too have a soft spot for Ma Dong Seok! His presence makes movies and dramas a lot more exciting and fun :D
I will definitely add those movies to my future watches! I have been planning to watch Spy Gone North for ages but never got around to it :(
Gongjiam Haunted Asylum has zero scares, no character development, there's no substance in it really. It's even…
The Wailing is a great movie indeed, definitely better than Gonjiam, but also a lot more popular. I disagree that it doesn't have scary moments.. While there's a lot less atmospheric build-up compared to Wailing, there are more moments that got me jumping from my chair in Gonjiam than in the wailing. I agree with the lack of character development, which I also clarified in my article. Substance is subjective, but in the end there's only so much you can do with a found footage film compared to a "normal" movie point of view.
Kim Ki Duk is one of the directors that I sadly always seem to skip even though I know he's huge and influential, I will definitely try to check his works out soon!
Oooo that sounds really good from that alone... might have to try that one out
Didn't you tell me you watched Life because you want to go into med?
I watched Life because of 조승우 and the writer was the same writer as Stranger, but the show was such a let down for me compared to Stranger. So if you enjoyed Life, you will love Stranger (except it's a prosecutor drama instead of medical haha)
Has got to be Stranger. There are a couple of dramas that I consider 10/10s (Stranger, my mister, signal and live) but none of them had me as invested as Stranger. Funnily enough it was one of my first dramas as well, and I immediately struck gold. Made me love 조승우 a lot as well.
So confused. People told me it was coming end of January but now everyone seems to say end of July... I was so hyped haha, but I guess end of January was way too soon as Bae Doona only confirmed a month ago or something
Thanks for your recommendations! I have written them down~
1987 is an amazing movie with a killer cast. I would recommend it to everyone!

I will watch at least 2 KKD movies soon! Promise!

You would rather watch trash j-horror than watch banger korean classics :D
1) Oldboy
2) The Handmaiden
3) Parasite
4) Shoplifters
5) A Taxi Driver

It is one of the very few SERIOUS k-dramas I've found.
