Already, the mother-daughter relationship shown is quite nuanced. CSS's mother believed that to make up for a lost time; she needed to be rigorous, eliminating all of CSS's disgracefulness as a lady of the period. Whereas an oppressive environment molded CSS, one cannot expect CSS to preserve grace when she struggled for her life. It also highlighted whether a mother who has not been present since birth should still have the right to discipline if the child's basic emotional needs are not satisfied just because they share the same blood. I can appreciate the mother's concern about CSS's character, but whether this concern stems from her regrets about leaving CSS behind or from CSS becoming someone she did not expect, her method of discipline is that of a general and not a mother.
