On The Midnight Romance in Hagwon May 30, 2024
Here’s a funny thought.
Imagine:
Somewhere far away up in high towers
In between the polluted thunderclouds
Almighty masterminds created an AI
Capable of making full length 16 ep. K-dramas.
“In the style of” whatever you feed it.
You guessed it right: indeed, it was fed “Something in the rain”.
And then, in a matter of minutes,
A midnight romance came into existence...
(just a weird thought while choking on a wild Deja-vu)

Although some of the plot twists feel a bit forced and some of the supporting characters are somewhat bland, these series might still be among some of the best Thai series\films I've ever seen.. Corrupted religious institutions are REALLY nothing new under the sun, but I've never seen it play out in this particular environment.
for the record; I'm not Thai, not Asian, and secular, but I'm familiar with a certain religion that uses a gazillion of tricks to monetize itself and then yet another gazillion of tricks to pull people closer to it and make them do what it needs to sustain itself. It's just as appalling as you think it is.
the ML's acting skills stand out - respect.
The rest of the main cast are pretty good too, don't get me wrong)
Bottom line: when something is smartly written and awesomely executed - it should get the recognition it deserves, that's all I'm saying.....

Title Midnight
I am sorry.
This is such a sad pile of fecal matter, it's an offence to the people involved in the making and to the people watching.
If you have a tiny lil' bit of life experience, a pinch of common sense and have watched a couple of thrillers before - you don't need me to tell you this.
What saddens me more than its existence, is the actor's decisions to take part in it.
You see, I don't believe they are THAT stupid to think it's gonna be a good film.
I think they are cynical.
And if that's really the case - that's really creepy.
...or maybe they all just owed a giant favor to the director or to the producer or smthng and couldn't decline? I find this idea comforting and gonna hold on to it :-)))

Many thanks for the thorough article, had a lot of throbbing questions answered, some of them I never knew I had before reading it. Feel better now) Also, really liked the way it is structured.
As a small-time literature and culture nerd, I especially appreciated "the inspirations" part.
.......
Funny thing is, I don't like "censored BL" - something very unsettling and endlessly sad about the very concept of it: an embodiment of unfulfilled life's promises, suffocating human hypocrisy and the futility of one's existence within the system, all merged into one off tasting mixture, which I find somewhat depressing.
No do I like the horror genre, in whatever form. Just no.
Moreover, the series seem to be uneven in terms of budget distribution between all the different production components. But in this case, I don't necessarily see it as a drawback.
Some of the minor characters were pretty cliché, while others only had a few scenes and still really impressed.
Just one last little thing before the BUT, ok?
Let's be honest for a second, some of the times one of the leads shines a bit brighter than the other) And while his shining is admirable in itself, this discrepancy impairs viewer's ability (and an inherent desire) to suspend his disbelief, does it not?
BUT! Nonetheless!
All the components of it (the series as a whole), some flawed and some exceptional, when put together, somehow make something...something... something unique, that just lives on it's own , you know what I mean?
And when that happens, you know it's good.
