WOW the rape culture and the misogyny are STRONG in this film
Imagine watching a masterpiece satire about moral decay and thinking it is endorsing the behavior instead of exposing how hollow and corrupt those characters actually are. The movie is literally a critique of 90s Taipei materialism and the loss of humanity not a celebration of it. Go watch disney instead because edward yang is clearly too complex for you to grasp the difference between depiction and endorsement
Such a bleakly funny, profoundly angry film about the spiritual rot and displacement under 1990s global capitalism; within which Yang creates some unique, unholy blend of Lubitsch, Ray, and Stroheim, transposed to Y2K Taipei and contemporary neoliberalism. Hilarious and soul crushing in equal measure. Near the end of the film, after tensions and frustrations have reached a boiling point, one of the most upsetting murder sequences in the history of cinema occurs. It’s a moment so enraged, complicatedand bone-chillingly real that I felt sick to my stomach. About 15 minutes later, the film ends with one of the most romantic, tender images I’ve ever seen.My heart soared in a way that the preceding film had almost convinced me was impossible. Just unspeakably moving. That’s Yang for you
