Regarding YFS's death, I thought it was really well done because it showed that XHA ended up killing him using…
I think the trick is not "little." There are interesting push and pull in that scenes.
XHA surrendered and "conceded" defeat. He showed how defastated and tired he was. He was a madman, talking about being mad, the feeling and the yearning to see the beloved again, and hallucinating about his sister.
When I watched this I do believe that he is really crazy. YFS believed it, too. So he let XHA to get out, to meet his demise in the sword of a Huben outside. But, unbeknowst to YFS, XHA had a plan with Mr. Long to trick YFS. What is needed is a moment of reflection, to feel his feeling and be aware of his fatherly love toward Wang Pu.
The previous talks with XHA is a priming to control YFS's perception when a figure like Wang Pu flashes in front of him. Emotion took his critical thought, open himself to an attack and he cannot defend himself now.

I don't know what scenario would be the best, YFS to die this way or that way.
For some people, his die must be dramatic, like involving a sword fight. But, our ml cannot do martial arts. Maybe in a battle, but it won't do since he is still in control of military. He will the the one who win. Maybe through direct assssinantion, but nobody can't do that either since YFS is surrounded by his shadow guard. What else?
So I think, XHA is the best strategy: By surrendering himself first and do the rest as showed in the episode, using himself as the "weapon".
Maybe we think it kind of anticlimatic, but maybe it is because we are too often see victory achieved through fights or poisons or the means of justice or sacrifice (typical of historical drama), not mind trick, psychological manipulation, and deception. So, this drama is truly exceptional.
Probably because people think that if you're a fan of revenge dramas you'd enjoy both? I think it's valid, though…
True. Mei Changsu came to the capital with full arsenal and knowledge about everything. He knows his enemies, but his enemies don't know about him. He has clear targets to shot, and he is protected well in his fortress by a doctor, a bodyguard, a prince, two military generals, and two big organizations in the jianghu.
Here, XHA is basically a fugitive. He plays from the shadow. He doesn't have strong allies, only several people that share similar cause with him, yet some them are actually traitors and he is used for their own agenda. The targets are always moving and changing, emerge from unexpected corners. The casualities are beyond his expectation. What a hardship to win the game.
why's nirvana in fire on top of the recommendation list? It's disturbing. not every revenge drama is NIF! this…
NIF is an outstanding show. It was 10 years ago. Truly legend. The first in CDrama that tells a character like Monte Cristo of the West. Their only similarity are theme and quality production. But the premise, the plot, the narrative technicality, the setting, are completely different. TVOA has its distinct identity and worthy a praise. For me, to be comparable to NIF is an achievement, not a problem.
one thing about this drama is that it doesn't have any romance for the ML.. like it's just make sense, someone…
Women portrayed in this drama are sister, friend, daughter, mother, and wive, not lover. There is love, but not in the romantic forms. It is more relational and committed. I love this choice. Because in the era of conflict, the most impacted by war is relations people have and their strength is measured by how great their commitment to each other.

When it is slowed down, it wants to deliver some information or let you feel some emotions.
When it is fast, surely it wants you to feel the thrills and impacts of the actions.
I think that instead of feeling disappointed, we should trust the show that has already satisfied us for 22 episodes.
And for YFS, too bad. He still has feeling.
