Wangmagwi is an alien creature, not an ape, but the movie itself compares him to King Kong, so let’s keep it at that. There are some other comparisons to be made. This alien monster actually has some similarities to a monkey, and he finds his bride just like King Kong did. But here, nothing really makes sense.

It has already been 60 years since this movie was made, and I don’t know if people at that time saw it as anything other than a parody. Did the cinema magic make them believe they were watching a real monster? To me, it is obvious that the monster is just a man in a grotesque costume, the alien ship is just a plate with a light bulb, and the destroyed buildings are made of paper. What also makes me suspect that this isn’t meant as serious monster sci-fi is the plot. The behavior of the people was truly parodic and comical. If anything, I did laugh a little while watching. Also, the cuts between scenes were too abrupt. So I would say that this is a classic trash movie that is worth seeing once for an exploration of movie history, but by today’s standards, it doesn’t pass as a competent or serious film.
