So if you think of it as chronological, cycle of events then it's basically like he was always supposed to return to five years later and that's why he was not found in present...because he was already five years later! Ooooh I love a good mind bender! I like this! I'm gonna take it as canon now. I mean it is canon.

Maybe, maybe he could be saved in the past but the thing is, if he had escaped the past, he would have died in the present time fire. So actually being in the past is the only way he could be saved. My main issue is how a five-year-old child had any concept of 18 years ago. And maybe if they had not wasted time on unnecessary conversations earlier, then there would be enough runtime for a more convincing closing logic. That said, I still think the show was very well done and it ended good enough too. I actually hate it when shows really end in the first 15 minutes of the last episode and spend the rest of the episode with cheesy fluff.😖 I'll take a last-second reunion anytime!

I agree on the talking. If the had just rushed instead of dramatically monologuing at each other, they would all survive without all the anxiety and heartbreak.
